rush questions

by:

I'll be rushing as a freshman this fall, and I guess I'm wondering how much my high school gpa will come into play when sororities are considering me? I'd love to be considered for a bid from tri delt or XO, and I don't want my high school gpa to haunt me forever (it wasn't very good)

As much of an optimist as I am, and have to be honest with you. Tri Delta and Chi Omega have a GPA cutoff and they're typically good in grades. The cutoff for highschool will probably be 3.3 or 3.4 so you need to have done at least above average on high school to likely not get cut after open house round. They'll be able to make very very few grade exceptions (probably for a legacy) but luck is going to be the only thing in control of that. If you at least have a 3.0 gpa you have a less of a chance from getting cut from mid tier sororities (excluding kappa, theta adpi). But take a breath and reevaluate. You're already looking to be in a top house and are yet to see them so how would you know you actually want to be a Chi Omega or Tri Delta. You'll be spending 4 years with your future chapter and living with them for a year. Make sure you'll actually fit in and like them instead of aiming to be in a sorority just because they're popular. It's cliche but trust trust the system, and your heart. If a popular sorority is where your heart truly lies and you get a bid, more power to you! You'll see meet a lot of girls who aren't in top houses this year who were top house material, but chose where they loved and felt comfortable instead.

I graduated with a 3.2, and my sister was a XO at georgia so I'm a legacy. Does that help?

Both of those houses have some of the highest GPA requirements. Every house is allowed to take grade risks if you fall just below their GPA cut-off but I wouldn't hold my breathe.

If your grades are not good you will be cut by DDD and XO

I'm in one of the 2 houses mentioned and I had a 3.1 coming in which is lower than our requirement but I got a bid! Most likely you need to have the grades but there are a few exceptions sometimes

I graduated with a 3.1 as well, and I was super involved in sports and service work. This is really encouraging for me lol

If you didn't do well in high school, where the most popular grade handed out is an A, I would encourage you to consider other houses for a variety of reasons. First, you will have more in common with the girls in a house where grades aren't as important. Second, you will be under extreme pressure to do well and to prove that making an exception for you was the right thing to do, and who needs to start out their college years with that kind of stress? Third, don't ever think that being a legacy will help you, especially if your sibling didn't go to Mizzou. Legacies are a dime a dozen and we actually have stricter standards for legacies. Fourth, since you didn't do well in high school you might want to reconsider going through rush at all, especially if you already have decided you will only be happy in a top tier house.
