homecoming

by:

Has any sorority ever thought about not doing homecoming? Or only doing part of it and not the whole thing?

Am I the only one who thinks it's a major waste of time and money, and that we get used by the alumni association every year? I hate that it's basically hazing our new members, and that all the money we spend could go to some kind of brilliant campus-wide philanthropy instead.

I wouldn't want to not do the blood drive. But pouring thousands of dollars and hours into house decs and floats just seems so... wasteful.

First of all, it's not hazing new members. There is nothing wrong with an organization requiring its members to work on a project that is a priority for the organization. Plus, it is hugely helpful in team building and helps new members get to know each other. Second, it is a contribution that the Greek community makes that helps make Mizzou a better place to be. If you had been here the year ESPN broadcast Game Day from our campus (as I was when my older brother was a sophomore here), you would know that our homecoming celebration is second to none and we received national attention for it. It's no wonder that in successive years applications to Mizzou skyrocketed. I can't think of a better cause than supporting our school. Also, most sororities are rolling in money. We have dues and membership fees from hundreds of women who don't live in the house and our house budgets reflect that. Homecoming is in the budget and it's well worth the money. We have philanthropies all year long and homecoming doesn't take anything away from those worthwhile causes. And, finally, it's fun! I have to say I have never been as proud as when I have taken family members and friends who visit during homecoming all around Greektown to show what we can do when we work together.

I have heard several people on this site say if the new rules are put in place by the cancelor that houses should boycot homecoming. What are the thoughts on that?

I can't imagine my freshman year with out homecoming. It was a lot of work, but I loved at the time I spent getting to know my sisters and the guys in the frat we were paired with. Tons of late night popping, eating pizza and being crazy! I'm still friends with all of the guys and it helped me get to know tons of people.

You realize that houses aren't required to do homecoming right? There are some fraternities that choose to opt out of homecoming and not spend the time and money. Sororities are free to do the same. There is no rule that you're required to do house decs and required to do float, honestly you really don't have to do anything, but who wants to be responsible for bringing down the largest homecoming in the nation?

it's just recently become a rule that sororities can opt out of homecoming, but i doubt any of them would because it would make them look terrible in the future to PNMs.
