Ladies of rush 2015, you will be reading a bunch of crap on this page.
Yes, there are clearly sororities who have long standing "popularity"
Yes, you will constantly hear "the three" pi phi, tri Delt, chi o
^ and you will hear them in that order, it's like some stupid established saying
Yes, you're probably going to read there are tiers of sororities, and yes you will read there are scandals involving racism and pregnancy... But sadly, what you won't be reading enough of is how wonderful our Greek life is as a whole and how strong a community it is. I hope nothing you read on these pages keeps you from going through formal recruitment. It may be the most exhausting and the most hectic time of your life, but it teaches you so much about yourself and your values and where you see yourself. Each sorority is a house of many different type of girls, yet a group of girls that share strong values. College is a time to define yourself, and some girls see sororities as the label that defines you, that you need to be in one of "the three" in order to be labeled as top on campus... But it's not the sorority that labels you, but what you do once you enter that sorority. Come to rush with an open mind and explore all your options. Don't automatically drop a house you hear as "lower tier", and don't psych yourself when talking with "top tier." The only way you will be happy throughout your experience in Greek life is if you make the choice for yourself, and not for some assumed label.

I am a high school senior about to graduate who will be going through recruitment in august. I red this site regularly for entertainment and I get it: it is not an accurate reflection of Greek life. What bothers me is all of the people lecturing us here about what to believe and what not to believe. It is so insulting. If we thought the Greek system was bad, would we want to join? Do you really think this is the only place we can get information on sorority life? We all have friends, sisters, mothers, aunts and others we know who were in sororities and loved it. That's why we are throwing our hat into the ring, too. So stop being so condescending and give us a little credit. We will make up our own minds. Stop telling us what to think.

I will be going through rush in August, too. I sure hope I don't wind up in the same house as the OP. I mean, does she always lecture people that way? Give me a break. I'll make up my own mind, thank you.

Yes, it's important to make up your own mind but please don't be a know it all freshman when you pledge a house and feel like you don't have to listen to anyone of authority in a house. You do not know more than the girls in your house who have been here 1-3 years longer than you. Sometimes you will need to be lectured about something and you better be listening and following the advice if you want to be a member of a house. The fastest way to make a bad name for yourself is to come in with a "I'm better than you or know more than you" attitude around the actives. Hope this isn't too condescending for you to read.

I don't get it. There will be people of authority telling us what to think and do during rush? How does that work? And why is it so bad for us to make up our own minds about which house is right instead of having someone "of authority" telling us what to do and think. Do they come to the dorms to tell us or do they do it during rush parties. I am really confused. I thought making up our own minds was a good thing.

Did you even read what the person you responded to wrote? She wasn't even talking about recruitment but your attitude in general. I seriously doubt that you are actually a PNM. This response and some of the others sound a lot like the typical posts we get on here from bitter non Greeks looking to cause drama.

The OP is in a lower tier house and spends her life trying to convince people that upper tier houses are nothing special. Time to move on, Ladies. Nothing here.

Tell me again who needs to check their attitude, because I am getting some really unwelcoming and insulting vibes by people already in sororities. Who are you to question the attitude of someone who is enthusiastic about rush but who wants to make up her own mind. And who are you to question the attitude of someone with some perfectly good questions about an extremely confusing post. "Sometimes you will need to be lectured about something and you better be listening and following the advice if you want to be a member of a house." That sentence sounds exactly to me ike lecturing will be done to people who want to be a member of a house (aka PNMs)

Well, I can tell you that if some active comes to my dorm room during rush and tells me what to think or what to do, I will have my PiCHi kick her to the curb.

Actives aren't allowed to talk to PNMs outside of recruitment, so this would never happen... Once again, they are talking about after you pledge a house, NOT during recruitment.

No one will be coming to your room to tell you what to do. The only one your PiChi will have to kick to the curb is YOU. She will be the one that has to make that awkward phone call to you when you get dropped from recruitment by all the houses and don't receive a bid.

Well, aren't you pleasant! Thanks God you and your attitude do not represent the majority of Greek life. Here is a PNM who doesn't exactly understand the process, and you decide the best thing you can do is tell her she won't be getting a bid. And why? Because she disagrees with you or had the audacity to express her confusion on this site. Shame on you.

Although the OP doesn't give enough credit to our future PNMs, she has some wisdom here even if it wasn't articltaed clearly. The main point is to rush every house like it is a top house. I remember when I was rushing I REALLY wanted to be a Pi Phi everyone told me how awesome MU's Pi Phi is and how I would make a great Pi Phi and Pi Phi this and Pi Phi that. So by the time august rolled around Pi Phi was the house I wanted so badly and rush didn't even start yet. The biggest lesson I learned thorughout recruitment is that I should rush every single house like it was Pi Phi. After I figured that out rush got so much better. Even though I am not a Pi Phi I am in an equally as good house and love it! To all the PNMs keep your head up, the girls you will be talking to during rush value and respect you an dcannot wait to meet you.
