question

by:

This is kind of a double question. I'm from out of state, and I know absolutely no one at Mizzou. Could this hurt my chances of getting into a house since no one knows me?

Also, I come from a long line of Greeks (mom, dad, sister, grandma, and even great-grandma were all in houses). I am very interested in looking at the houses I'm a legacy to, but I really want to keep an open mind and not be limited to just those. Do other houses know which ones you're a legacy to?

I can't wait for fall! Thanks :)

1. knowing people helps, a lot. there is a stronger likelihood that you will fall through the cracks if you don't know anyone. if you don't know anyone - get reference letters to as many chapters as you can. I don't think that will be a problem for you considering you say you have a lot of family in greek life. I'm in a top house and don't think i would be if someone I knew hadn't put in a good word for me because I'm also from out of state and didnt have rec letters.

2. when you sign up for rush you have to put if you're a legacy and where. It will not count against you if you're outstanding. Houses like competing to steal each other's legacies if you're an exceptional PNM. if you're an ok PNM and a strong legacy to a different chapter, we might count you out. If you get rec letters you also need to put what houses you're a legacy to, so regardless - we will know.

good luck! :)

I totally disagree. I think knowing someone in a house can really work against you, whereas girls from out of state have an advantage. If you know someone in a house and they go to bat for you, you never know if that girl is well-respected or whether she will have a negative influence. If you went to high school with a bunch of girls in a house, you never know if that helps or not because someone said your older sister once stole her older sister's boyfriend or that your best friend made the cheerleading squad and the girl in the house that you know didn't and she has resented you ever since. Well, you get the idea. But when no one knows you, your resume, your recs and your personality do all of the talking, not some petty high school vendetta. I was from out of state and sailed through rush. Now that I have seen the other side of rush, I understand why.

I wish I would've been from out of state. Too many people from St. Louis catholic schools in every house so somebody always knows you or had a run in with your friend or wanted to date your boyfriend, etc... You can have a great resume but be cut by one person for a ridiculous reason.

You do NOT have to put down where you are a legacy from. You can have your family submit all of that through the national organization that they belong to. For my organization, you can go online and submit a legacy form that goes directly to the chapter/advisors. Best of luck, and enjoy the process!!

Well I did not know one person and yes I fell through the cracks! I think it also depends on what state your from. If your from somewhere "cool" like Cali, Colorado etc.... yes then thats a plus. If your not, your overlooked. My roommate was from a public high school in STL and was hanging by a thread during rush to one so called "mid tier" house and her "good friend" from high school magically appeared to save the day! Funny how that worked out?

I'm from Wisconsin, which is anything but a cool state. But I had a great time during rush, wound up with two top-tier houses and one mid-tier on the last day, and got a bid to a top tier house. I was thrilled with the way rush went and am thrilled to be part of the Greek system. I knew NO ONE when I went through rush, but I did know the different between "your" and "you're," so maybe that's what made the difference. LOL!

I'm from out of state and was a triple legacy to a house I didn't end up pledging. I didn't get cut by any houses all week. I did get recs to almost every house (it can't hurt, right?) the house I was a triple legacy to definitely gave me special treatment, but I didn't find any other houses held that against me. Don't worry about it, be yourself and try to enjoy recruitment as much as possible. It's a little stressful but fun, and it's a great way to meet people.

1. I transfered in and didn't know anybody and I found that not knowing someone helped me out a lot. There was nobody in any house to say something about me one way or another, so they judged me only on their impression of me. It made my rush very easy. I'm a very sociable, easygoing person though so my conversations were pretty vibrant and fun. Because you don't know anyone, you need to be bubbly and put yourself out there. No room for shyness!

2. Your legacy house will know and it will help you. Other houses shouldn't know that unless you bring it up. My advice is don't bring up you're a legacy unless you're in your legacy house. Example, if you're a Delta legacy, only bring that up when you're in Delta. If another house asks you about being a legacy, say something neutral like, "My mother and grandmother were greek, so I'm very excited to find a chapter that I love and start my own greek experience." You acknowledge you're a legacy, without bringing up where you're a legacy at, and you establish that you have an open mind about all the houses.

Good luck dear!

1. i'm from out of state and only knew a few people, and it didn't help me in rush. if anything, girls will think its really cool that you're from out of state. i'm from denver and people always asked me a million questions about it. it's a great conversation starter, which will probably help with nerves. i was really nervous during rush!

2. legacies and letters of rec really help, definitely put those down if you can.

all in all, just be yourself (but be appropriate of course: general guidelines of what not to talk about are booze/boys/bank/politics/etc.) Good luck this fall!

The people who say it really helps to know someone in a house who will have your back are really looking for an excuse as to why they were cut. "I didn't have anyone in the house pulling for me so I got cut," or "All of the girls in their pledge class knew someone in the house so others didn't have a chance." This is total BS. Sororities are looking for the best girls they can find. If you look good on paper, can carry on a conversation and have what they want, you're in. There is not a house in the world where the support of just one member means you are guaranteed a spot (well, unless that girl is the rush chair and she is doing sneaky things).
