What's it like being a pledge? Are they actually allowed to have much of a life?

That depends a bit on how good you are at time management. You will be busy. You'll have chapter meetings once a week, new member meetings once a week, occasional sisterhoods and other activities. If your house has its philanthropy in the fall, you may have a weekend or several days where you are doing activities for that. And then there is Homecoming. Homecoming is early this year, so most houses will be very busy with it as soon as school starts. Honestly, if it weren't for the insanity of homecoming, the new member period would be a lot more laid back. But everyone will be participating in homecoming, not just new members. After homecoming things will slow down a lot, both for new members and actives.

You certainly can have a life, and being a member of a sorority enhances that life. There is a reason Homecoming is so labor-intensive for pledges: it helps you get to know members of your pledge class in a fun setting. But be forewarned: if you make partying and sorority obligations your only priorities, your grades will suffer. I've seen women who came out of high school with high GPA's barely make grades. And you sure don't want to start off your college career with a bad first semester. That means you are playing catch-up the whole rest of the time. Sad, but true.
