rush

Not trying to sound snobby at all, but I went to a college prep, very challenging highschool and have about a 3.46 gpa. Could this possibly hold me back from getting a bid anywhere? I have tons of extracurriculars and leadership

No, a 3.46 should be above just about every grade cut. And even if a house has a 3.5 grade cut, your GPA is close enough that exceptions will probably be made if they really like you.

Your grades won't eliminate you, but your attitude might. We all are in college and the vast majority of women going through rush graduated from suburban college prep high schools. The AVERAGE ACT at my Chicago area public high school was a 31. Mine was a 33 and I had a better GPA than yours. So if you ratchet back your superiority complex, you might have a chance. But if you think the typical Missouri sorority girl rarely wears shoes and can't conjugate a verb (in English, Spanish OR French), you will be surprised.

EVERYONE thinks they go to a very challenging high school. And lots of them have above a 3.46.

Well some highschools are more challenging. I'm not stuck up by any means, but when I have friends at different schools going out on school nights and never doing homework while I'm at home with at least 4 hours of homework each night and we have almost the same gpa, I know my school is more challenging than their's.

That's why ACT scores are more important than grades, and why my house pays more attention to them.

ACT is important but my house looks more at your GPA for 4 years of work.

I am a potential PNM and I have a decent GPA of 3.5. I worked my butt off for my grades. I was diagnosed with a learning disorder and tried to take the ACT multiple times, but could never finish. My score was not good. Should I not go through rush because of this? Will I be cut from all houses because of my ACT score?

As I'm sure you know, students with legit learning problems can take the ACT with a special proctor and have more time to complete it. All it takes is a letter to the ACT board from the person who has diagnosed the learning disability. I would take it again.

I understand that, but I took it 5 times. I couldn't understand why I couldn't finish and why I was having such a hard time! I was just recently diagnosed. I don't know if it's worth it to take it now.

I hope you don't think I am being rude or insulting. I'm just trying to be helpful. I think sorority life is the last thing you should be thinking about. If studying does not come easily to you and you had to "work your butt off" to get a 3.5 in high school, and if you couldn't even finish the ACT, I think you should have other priorities. You can't imagine what it is like sitting in a lecture hall of hundreds of people trying to grasp the most important elements of a topic when you can barely see or hear the lecturer. Then you get into smaller lab sessions with grad students who have never taught before. Some of them are great and others barely speak English. And then you have all of 45 minutes to finish just one or two mid-terms and a final that constitute your entire grade. And those are the freshman classes that everyone must take before even taking one more interesting class in your major. Why don't you see how the education part of college goes first and then rush as a sophomore if you have really gotten a handle on things. If you rush as a sophomore you won't have to worry about ACT's anyway, just your freshman GPA.

I don't think you're being rude and I appreciate your opinion. I will definitely think about what you said. Now that I know what my learning disability is, I think I have a better handle on what I need to do to succeed. Thank you.

I agree with what the other poster said about getting your bearings first and seeing how well you do, but rushing as a sophomore is 10x harder. You have to have an excellent GPA. Another thing you can do if you want to see how one semester goes, is to COB (Continuous Open Bidding) this is a great option because it is very informal. You go to the house for some sisterhood events and just sit and talk to multiple girls. It is very chill, however, not all sororities COB. Also this happens mostly in the spring, to the houses that don't fill their quotas. Good luck with this process! Lastly, if you can get into Mizzou with a 22 on your ACT, that's a privilege, your ACT score doesn't define you and they do want to see your GPA more.
