grades

by: pnm

Okay so my high school GPA could have been better (2.8) and I understand that that factor definitely increases my chances of being knocked out the first round. However, I did decide to graduate a semester early and I'm taking a full load of classes at a community college to get a semester ahead. Now that I'm actually in college my grades are a top priority and I have straight A's. So my question is... will my much better college GPA give me a better shot at rushing?

Seeing as you are fully enrolled in a community college and taking courses, I believe most chapters will take the GPA from the community college over your high school GPA. If you truly have straight A's, as you mentioned, you will be fine as far as grade cuts go during recruitment! Glad you're coming to Mizzou :)

We don't really have much interest in juco kinds of girls. We would certainly also want to know about their h.s. gpa and also why they didn't enroll in a legit college instead of a juco.

Wow you need to read. She graduated high school a semester early. She's not even techincally supposed to be at a real college yet. Props to her and she will most definitely be considered by top houses of she has straight A's at the college level.

Oh, and for the record, top houses DO take girls who went to community college for their first year. I know, because im a member of one and went to jucco my first year. As long as your grades are great from that year and you've proved you're not a liability and you're super likable you're golden.

Wow. YOU need to read beneath the surface. 1) If someone graduates early it means they likely have taken NO AP classes their senior year, because AP tests are held in May. If someone takes no AP classes their senior year, they aren't that bright. 2) Considering the competition, getting straight A's at a community college is hardly a big deal. In fact, I'm not sure I know anyone at a juco who HASN'T gotten straight A's. 3) When someone leaves high school early and chooses to not graduate with their class, there often is something else in play. Often it's because they feel ostracized in some way and don't get along well with others or feel part of the group. 4) At many of the better high schools you can take classes at legit colleges, either on line or in the afternoons or evenings. There is no reason to settle for a community college if you are really that bright. And I don't think she graduated early because she is setting the world on fire academically.

Judge much? Hope the fall off of your delusional self-entitled pedestal doesn't hurt too much. It will happen some day. Why can't we all just be supportive and get along.

Good for you, pnm. It's admirable that you are doing so well and are motivated to do continue to do so. Don't let the catty comments hold you back.

To jvapoieujr: I always have to laugh when someone pretends to be kind and supportive why saying some of the nastiest things imaginable to someone they don't agree with. So you are sweet to the junior college girl while misleading her, but wish nothing but contempt to the person who tells it like it is. You know, you really aren't very nice at all and you are just as judgmental as the person you are criticizing. You really aren't fooling anyone.

No one is really going to be able to give you a definite answer. You'll just have to try going through recruitment and see what happens. Some houses may still give the most weight to your high school GPA since you will be a freshman incoming. (Unless you will have sophomore standing, in which case they may be more likely to ignore your HS grades, but will also be more likely to hold your sophomore status against you if they want mostly freshmen.)

Go into recruitment with the attitude that the only houses on campus are those that invite you back. Focus on who invites you and what you can contribute to their organization. Know that you may have very harsh cuts that have nothing to do with your personality, and respect those houses that are willing to take a chance on you by being friendly, gracious, and accepting of their invitations.

To the girl wondering why I graduated early... You're absolutely right. There was something else in play.. I didn't have enough time to take care of my mother who is sick with cancer and was going through chemotherapy. If girls in a house are going to judge me because of that, don't worry I have no interest in being apart of them as much as they would have no interest in a juco girl. Thanks for your input though.

I think that all of the posts on this thread just shows how differently chapters recruit! Don't worry about your gpa too much! There is no way to tell which chapters will look at your high school gpa vs your college gpa, but my chapter is considered "middle tier" and would definitely just look at your college gpa, so you have a good possibility of getting into some houses here! Just as a word of advice, I would stay off this site from now on. There is some major unnecessary cattiness and I really hope that the posts above do not discourage you from rushing!! Stay positive girl, and I'm sending major prayers your way for your mom!:)
