Yes it is extremely hard. You either have to be model-gorgeous and a good dancer, or decently pretty but an amazing dancer. They judge you on everything - appearance, personality, and dance.

I think the better question is why would you want to. I think the days of women having to parade around strutting their assets is long gone. Can't believe this archaic tradition still exists.

Because some girls actually just like to dance in pretty costumes and pretty hair. Not because they want male attention or feel like they have to or should... They just like to do it. No one is making them.

If someone is going to judge me, I guess I would rather it have something to do with academics, intellect or any contribution to society I might make. This isn't 1957.

You're completely right. This isn't 1957.

You wanna talk gender roles? Okay. You're telling women not to look pretty and dance around in sparkly little outfits because it's demeaning and archaic. 60 years ago, women were told they should stay home and clean and take care of the kids because anything else was men's work.

Guess what, BOTH of those are oppressive because both of those dictate to women exactly what they should or shouldn't do.

Thankfully, we live in an age where women have the freedom to MAKE THEIR OWN CHOICES, whether it be dancing in a sparkly dress or rocket science. Ahhh, isn't freedom great?!

I fail to see how telling someone to aim a little higher and reach beyond some male-centric idea of beauty is oppressive. Yes, freedom is wonderful, as long as you use it to your best advantage. What good is it to be free when all you decide to do is buy into the old stereotypes of success? I'm sorry, but spending your college years with your a s s hanging out of a sparkly costume is exactly the same as staying home to clean and keep house. If it's all about choices, why not make the decision to use your mind, not your body?

Why do you think they aren't using their minds and spending their college years with their asses hanging out? Some of them are engineering students and very bright. Some of them are in the Sinclair nursing school. Some of them are on KOMU. Why do you think that because they are Golden Girls they aren't accomplished in other ways?

Stop making assumptions. Stop judging.

Your body type matters!!!! Pretty faces and strong dance skills are a must, but not as much as body type. Look at all the current team members.

Well over 100 not including returnees. Go to the clinics and you will see what is expected of you.

The world is full of people that are different. Some women are more artistic and want to express themselves through movement. Most of the GG have competed in dance almost their whole lives. Making a living as a dancer is rare and those on the GG have chosen to major in all sorts of areas but still desire to be involved in their art form-dance. Maybe what they do at the games isn't that impressive, it is a spirit squad, intended to help the crowd to cheer on teams-both men's and women's teams by the way. If you want to see their actual art-come to the spirit squad competition showcase April 6th. Maybe then you will get off your judgmental high horse and open your eyes.

Oh so Julliard is not an art school? Why are degrees in dance a BFA -ie Bachelor of Fine Art? Go back to your backwoods upbringing. I would bet many of those girls have studied ballet and taken pointe.
