rush
by: NervousI have a 2.6 GPA. Will any house take me and which ones? I have a 26 act score, and awesome extra curricular list....
#1by: well
I hate to say it, but you should have spent a bit more time studying and a little less time on the extracurriculars. Most top houses are looking for the same thing that selective colleges are looking for: excellent grades, excellent ACT/SAT and a few important extracurriculars where you had leadership positions. Frankly, no one cares if you were in Spanish Club, Pep Club and a bunch of others unless you were president.
#3by: unless
Unless you have amazing connections within a sorority and a phenomenally good reason for your low GPA (like having cancer in high school) your best bet is to wait for informal in the spring or formal next year. Most, if not all, houses will have to get special permission from their headquarters to take you, and that is an exceptionally rare thing to happen. Not meaning to be harsh, just want to be honest.
#4by: it seems...
If you had that much trouble getting decent grades in high school, I think your time might better be spent studying that doing sorority stuff anyway. Don't kid yourself: some of those big freshman lectures/classes are difficult and extremely competitive. If you had a 2.6 in high school my guess is that you don't know much about how to study, so that should be your first priority. I would take a class over the summer to improve your study skills and if it works and you have at least a 3.3 or 3.4, you might try rushing the next fall.
#5by: Grades.
I came in from high school with a 2.8 and I got my top choice of house. There are grade cuts but you really need to connect and have a good conversation first round. You need to dazzle them. Higher the other ratings the better. That will definitely help save you for some houses.
#6by: COB
Some girls are taken in COB that had bad high school grades but have had a chance to show what they can do in college. So that's not really a fair comparison nor does it mean someone with a 2.6 in high school will be okay. Honestly a 2.6 will get you cut. Your best chance is rushing as a sophomore or hoping for COB.

The women who are talking about having a 2.8 and making the cut are apples to oranges. For most NPC sororities 2.8 is the absolute rock bottom. In my house, if we even wanted to consider someone with lower than a 2.8 we would have to get special permission from several alumnae officers. Could we take a 2.8? Yes, with some difficulty, if we had a really good reason and could justify it to a couple alumnae officers. Could we take a 2.6? Not without an exceptionally strong reason and without proving our case to a whole lot of people, all of which have the power to say no. That's not something we would ever do except in EXTREME circumstances.

Go through fall recruitment and at least visit every house once. You may get cut by many or all, you don't know but at least you will have an idea what each house is about. Don't rely on COB because COB is not fair!! It's all about who you know. You would be lucky to get invited to COB events to maybe a couple of sororities because there are only a couple that COB fairly and will interview all those interested. Most sororities won't even invite you to a COB event if your interested or not. If you know someone in a house that's your in, use it. Otherwise join the best house you can if you get an offer.
