Hi all! First, if you are on this site, I hope that you are taking all the posts you see with a grain of salt. Women come to this site often because they want to be intentionally catty. It does NOT reflect the awesomeness that is greek life at Mizzou! So please, use this site for entertainment value, but not for fact gathering or decision making.

That being said, there is a great FAQ page on our greek life website with information about Formal Recruitment. Please go there first to get the facts!!

There are 15 amazing houses at Mizzou. They are all strong in varying ways, and each is a place where you can find lifelong friends. But membership in a sorority isn't all about you, and what you want. It's also about what you can give, how you can contribute, and how your sisters can help make you a better person. You have to give to receive when it comes to sorority membership.

Also remember that every house has hundreds of members, and every new member class will be HUGE. Keep an open mind and you will almost certainly find a home. Don't go in to recruitment thinking that you will only accept a bid from certain houses, or that you are too good for other houses. Be respectful of all houses!! They all have something amazing to offer.

You seem very knowledgable. I'm wondering how important letters of recommendation are? Are they common at Mizzou? I've started seeking them out, but I know I won't find an alumnae for every chapter, and my mom's friend just gave me a lecture that I should be getting several recs per chapter! Is this necessary in order to be considered by a chapter?

Not at all. While rec letters are awesome, it's ultimately YOU that the chapters are concerned with. Most girls don't have rec letters for every chapter. Several only get a few. You won't get looked over for not having one. Just do your best and you'll find where you belong!

Rec letters always help. (Unless you send a gazillion and annoy the chapter.) But whether they are necessary is somewhat dependent upon the organization. Some chapters need them in order to offer you a bid, so if you don't get one, they have to get one for you. Some chapters don't need them, but will use them to help narrow down their pool of candidates, especially for first-round cuts. Some chapters probably don't look at them at all. ;)

All of which is to say, do the best you can to get a rec letter for each house. But if you can't get them, it doesn't mean you will end up without a bid! Hundreds of women get bids without rec letters. If a chapter that needs them loves you, they will find a way to get one.

And I personally would avoid sending multiple letters. A couple is fine, if the women really know you and really want to send it in. But several that all say the same thing and have the same standard info is just duplicative and creates extra work for the chapter.

Best of luck!! Hope you have an amazing experience with recruitment and sorority life!

Not important, especially in 2023. My daughter didn't have any and did just fine (a top house).

This needs to be read again instead of the other posts today that are intentionally trying to stir up trouble and spread lies about houses. There are a few people on here regularly who just enjoy trying to stir the pot and try to make it seem like some houses are bad. They continually reinforce false stereotypes that only exist on this site. I'm starting to believe that these people are not even a part of our Greek system but just intent on tearing it down.
