Do all incoming freshman have to have letters of recommendation and a specific GPA to get into a sorority?

Yes...You will need recs to get in any house at Mizzou. Most chapters have a grade cut. To be safe from grade cuts at all houses, I would say a 3.5 is needed!

I went through recruitment last fall and had rec letters for some of the houses but not all. They said at the Greek life meeting at summer welcome that they were great to have but not required. I'm in a house I love but was confused as to why I didn't get invited back to a few. If it really is necessary to have the recs I would like to know so I can give accurate information to some girls I know who will be coming to recruitment next year.

Most of the sororities have National Standards they must follow set by their National Headquarters. One standard is that a girl MUST have a rec to be pledged.I believe it is best that girls find these on their own as there is no way a house has the time to find around 2000 recs(one for each girl going through).I would tell your friends rushing to get recs to as many houses as they can!!

Thank you for the info. I'm not sure if I can get recs for a lot of the houses. I don't know a lot of people who have been in a sorority. Should I not rush if I can't get a lot of rec letters? I really want to be in a sorority, but I don't want to move in early and pay to rush if I don't have a chance.

Dont give up so quickly. Going through recruitment was the best thing I ever did and i love my sorority! The best place I found recs was from all my teachers and coaches over the years. Many of them helped me plus they also has friends that wrote them for me. Next try your church and where you work. Also have your parents ask their friends, neighbors and work associates. You will be surprised how many you can find but you will have to give the effort!

Yep. I got about 20 recs (excessive, I know) from friends/coworkers/neighbors of my parents alone

I had one rec to a chapter I didn't end up joining, and got into a "top" house, so its not entirely necessary.

Thanks everyone! I guess I will try to see where I can get recs and hope for the best! I am really excited about Greek life at Mizzou and pray I get into a house!

check out your local Panhellenic Alumni association in your area most major city's have them( Google it) many alumni are willing to write a recommendation if you ask, need one per house. start asking teachers, friends parents and neighbors for a rec. Defiantly grades will play a BIG role in bids. Check out Mizzou sororities on the school website. Good luck :)

I dont know where these women are getting their information, but you definitely do not need recs to get into every house. Maybe some, I don't know, but I know a bunch where recs help (if your tied for a spot with a girl that has a req and they only have one more opening she'll have the upper hand) but definitely not required. Rush, and if a house really wants you they'll make it work. I got into a middle tier house without a req, and I know several other girls in different houses that did too! I rushed as a sophomore because I was unsure like you are and I regretted so definitely definitely give it a shot your first semester when it's easier!!

I had letters for quite a few houses-but I didn't have one for any of my last three houses and accepted a bid from my top pick....

You absolutely MUST have a recommendation to join a house. It's best if you find someone to write one for you because it is yet another way for someone to say something nice about you so that you stand apart from the crowd. However, if you do not come up with someone to write one for you, the chapter will find someone to do it if they want to issue you a bid. This is what a lot of girls who have just gone through rush don't know because they have never been on the other side. So to tell someone they don't need a rec in order to join a sorority is absolutely incorrect and also shows their ignorance. Besides, why would you give up the opportunity for someone to praise you glowingly so that you can stand apart from the crowd? Girls with recs that are submitted ahead of rush have an edge. It's that simple.

A rec is like a seatbelt. You may never need it but it's best to have it anyway.
