i think you honestly don't need any requirements. they obviously care a lot about looks/your body, they don't do a lot of actual dancing during tryouts. more showy stuff like walks and pom

they do compete but you don't tryout for their hip hop and jazz competitive squads until you're already a golden girl...those tryouts happen at their first summer practice

Lol walks and poms. This is so wrong. The Golden Girls are top-notch dancers that have all been dancing their whole lives. They don't just test you on looks and and walks and pom.

The golden girls aren't "top notch dancers" they turn away plenty of girls that are amazing at dance for prettier and better looking girls. If you wanna see "top notch" dancers go search nationals on YouTube and compare it to the golden girls competitive squad routines.

Yes they are very selective but the girls trying out must learn a routine and have to perform it....it's not just walks and "showy stuff"

My 2 best friends are golden girls and they will admit that looks matter more than dance for tryouts. Not saying its a bad thing but that's just the way it is.

So do you have a choice to not compete?

By: So
by: YesJan 15, 2015 2:03:32 PM

Yes you do. You have the option to tryout to compete for nationals. There's 2 categories so you could try out for the hip hop squad alone, the jazz squad alone, both, or neither. It's your personal choice!

Their costumes are paid for but you have to pay for your white cowboy boots, jazz shoes, and gold travel bags...also the traveling costs come out of your own pocket except the per diem they give you for food. So say you live in Chicago and you're home for Winter break but there's a basketball game, you'd be responsible for getting yourself to Columbia for all the games. The competing isn't until spring semester so none of that would factor into the cost of dancing at football and basketball games.

Looks matter-no one wants unhealthy or unattractive representatives-but you must be a skilled dancer and performer. The judges have dance experience and most of the girls have competed at top notch studios. Competition routines are not the focus. Check the golden girls out on Facebook and go to the clinics /camp post to sign up. You will get a tour and there are current GG and people who want to try out there so you can gauge your skill.

Can you get over looked or cut if you never really danced but more so cheered?

It's 2015. Are women really obsessing about joining a group that focuses on looks, legs and how well you look in a sparkly outfit? REALLY?????? I find this so insulting.

It's 2015. Are women really obsessing about the choices of others, which have nothing to do with them? REALLY? I find THIS so insulting.

This is what's wrong with feminism today. It used to be about equality and women having the freedom to make their own choices. Now it's about shaming other women for the choices they make.

If college is a way of preparing your for the future, achieving your maximum potential and being the best you can be, I can't wait to see all of those 50-year-old Golden Girls sitting around in their stretched out spandex regretting they didn't expand their horizons in college instead of doing exactly what they did in high school. It's not about feminism in the least. It's about reaching and growing.

It's not your place to decide what these women should do or not do in college. Let me choose their own life path. If it doesn't help them in the future, so be it. It's not our place to judge either way.

Fyi one of my sorority sisters is a Golden Girl. She had a 4.5 GPA in high school, 4.0 GPA here at Mizzou, majoring in engineering, was in upper-level math and science courses as a freshman... I could go on and on. Many of the other Golden Girls are just as smart. Just stop, you're making yourself look bitter and stupid.

I know several Golden Girls; two are in my house and I've met the others in a variety of ways. All I can say is thank god they're pretty, because they make a box of rocks seem like Stephen Hawking. I get that women can be whomever they want to be in this day and age. That's what feminism has achieved and it's a good thing. I just can't believe that some women aspire to parade around in a glittery costume so that men can ogle them. There is no great brain trust needed to be a Golden Girl, folks, Let's not pretend they are the Madame Curie's of the world.
