hipster house

by:

Both of my older sisters are in sororities (an Alpha Phi at Purdue and a PiPhi at Wisconsin) and I will be a freshman at Mizzou next year planning to major in journalism. My sisters love being Greek and I have visited both of them on their campuses. They have made wonderful friends and I think being in a sorority really helped them find their niche on big campuses. I think I would like to go Greek, too, but I have one concern: I'm not a rah-rah kind of person. I'm more of a free-thinker, a little more artsy and my major is really important to me. I've been told I'm attractive, but I'm not the cheerleader type. I am from out of state and I don't know anyone in a Mizzou sorority, otherwise I would ask their advice. So I'm asking people here: do you think I could be happy in a sorority? Do you think any sororities would be interested in my type? I will be an Alpha Phi and PiPhi legacy, and my mom was a Theta. What are those houses like? I know rush is really competitive. Do you think I would have a chance? Thanks.

If you have good grades (and judging by the way you write, you're pretty smart), PiPhi is the place for you. They are full of girls who are a little edgy and think outside the box. More hipster than rah rah. Just beware. Being a legacy may be a slam-dunk in some houses, but it's no guarantee that you will get into PiPhi. Keep an open mind. But I really can't see you as an Alpha Phi.

no one can make the judgement that any certain house is the place for you. all houses are so different and you will not get a feel for it until you rush. As long as you have good grades, you're fine. But after being through rush on both sides the most valuable piece of advice I can give you is that even if you're more shy, quiet, and not super outgoing (rah-rah) you still MUST to some extent act that way during rush otherwise you will just become another girl out of the hundreds that doesn't talk and we drop you for being awkward. (Im in a top house).. Be outgoing, talk about yourself, be enthusiastic about the process and that's how you will stand out. Once you get in a chapter, (contd)

(contd) you will find your group of girls who are more chill and overall you will find your place within your chapter.

OP here. I'm not shy or awkward at all. I feel extremely comfortable in a variety of settings and have been told I could converse with a rock. It's just that I'm not an airhead and I prefer to talk about substantive things. I can't seem to muster any false enthusiasm for the mundane, so if conversations about hair and makeup and boys and what's in People magazine are what's expected, I fear I will be a fish out of water. However, I do feel sincerely enthusiastic about the process, especially if the result is finding a group of women with which I genuinely have something in common. So that's the conundrum.

You'll do fine. There are many sororities that rise above the superficial. I agreePiPhi would be a good choice, but don't rule out Theta (since you're a legacy there, too), ChiO or ADPi. All of those houses are the real deal. And there are some others, too. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Also don't rule out Alpha Phi. I have a lot of friends in that house and they are a very diverse chapter -- honestly, EVERY house is going to have a niche that you can fit into when you have chapter totals being over 200+ women in each house. Just go in with a positive attitude and give it a shot -- I wasn't 100% greek life was for me either, and I ended up in the best fit possible for me with friends I don't know where I would be without.

Every house has something to offer and chances are you will find good friends anywhere and everywhere. The thing about the rah-rah sorority girl cheerleader stereotype is just that. Even the rah-rah girls have some substance once you get to know them. We all know the stereotype, but few of us actually fit it.

My friend is a full blown hipster and she's in Delta. Avoid Chi-O, Theta and ADPi because they are built on the "rah rah" spirit you claim not to have. Pi Phi or Alpha Phi sound more your speed, which is perfect because you're a legacy to both.

I would avoid GPhi, Delta and Kappa. Lots of superficiality in those houses. Sounds like you have a bit more to offer than those houses would appreciate. Besides, I've never seen a hipster fake bake or bleach their hair, so that should rule out the first two automatically. And Kappa seems to like girls who don't make waves and just go along with the program. Not a lot of individuality there IMHO.

As you go through rush you might be surprised at where you feel most comfortable and where you wind up. But off the top of my head I think PiPhi or ChiO might be a good fit. Both are great houses with members who appreciate individuality. Good luck to you.

From what I've read so far and many reasons stated above, you definitely sound like a PiPhi or an Alpha Phi (which is perfect for you).. Both are really good houses that are normal, chill girls that don't have a lot of drama and focus on individuality. No matter where you end up, you'll find it's where you're meant to be!
