just noticing

by:

I've been noticing on here lately that someone is constantly accusing a house of racism, or asking if certain sororities or fraternities take women or men "of color", or some such phrase. Are y'all just trying to stir up trouble, or what? Because you kinda keep getting the same answers, but then another question pops up, worded in a different way, but it's about racism.

Does anyone else notice that? Is that just a way to tear down houses, or is someone stirring up trouble for the fun of it (where none exists) or what? because that's just wrong.

If you are talking about the gamma phi post then I honestly can not disagree with you more. It's not about bashing a house it's about how everyone notices that they do not take women of color based on them thinking its not pretty, stat, or whatever excuse they come up with. Yeah their president is not white but we are talking about black women not just half or 25% blah blah. They simply don't. And to the woman above me I am happy for you that you are in a house that you feel comfortable in but who ever posted that was about a specific sorority and it's sad that it did get 40 plus comments with people agreeing with that. maybe they should make a change or something. Because I guarantee half of the greek system agreed with that post. It's sad

I think commenting negatively on a sorority posting a photo that includes a Confederate flag is not "stirring up trouble for the fun of it (where none exists)." If a sorority is willing to publicly identify with the Confederate flag, that's a very real problem.

Why would you think people of color come on here asking questions about racism to stir up trouble? As a woman of color, I want to know beforehand what the campus climate is like before I commit to spending money on rush. Racism does exist on campus! I personally have decided against rushing as a freshman. I think people are so curious because Mizzou holds rush before classes, you don't have time to come on campus and get to know these people/the houses as students before you make that decision. I'm not going through formal recruitment because I want to see how these sororities/fraternities treat people of color for myself before I sign my allegiance over. It's not about stirring up trouble, it's about self preservation. Also white people do not get to define what is and isn't racism.

As an African American woman who is a member of a mid-tier sorority at Mizzou, I implore you to ignore than W/E just posted. I don't know who she is, but she certainly does not represent most of the women I came across during formal rush and in my three years as a member of the Greek system. Most people I know are not as ignorant, defensive, judgmental or ill-informed as she is. Yes, racism certainly exists on this campus, just as it does on any campus (or anyplace where 25,000 people from all backgrounds gather). But I have found that people here actually are more open-minded than I expected and are more than willing to listen instead of preach and lecture about what we are or are not supposed to think. As an aside, I hope you will reconsider about going through rush as a freshman. Yes, you may feel as if you aren't ready to make a decision or commitment, but everyone is in the same boat. You have a much better chance of joining as a freshman than as a sophomore, and COB-ing is a joke. No one knows the rules and the playing field may or may not be as level as it is during formal rush. The best way to see how you are treated is formal rush, where you can compare all of the houses under similar circumstances.
