just wondering

Why do you think Mizzou's sorority system is so outstanding and its fraternity system so mediocre?

I've wondered that myself. The girls who make it into sororities all seem to be outstanding in some way. And most frats will take just about anyone. Why is that?

We have twice as many frats which means more mediocre guys get bids.

Which is why we need to stop allowing more and more sororities join our community. None of the "newer" chapters have been very successful and now more and more chapters are falling behind. KD was once a strong mid tier chapter, but ever since sigma and sk got here their grades has fallen, involvement dropped, and have had to cob to keep members. The new houses are hurting zeta too. Zetas always been a bottom tier house, but now with sk here they had a disappointing rush and continue to have retention problems. We need to focus on helping these chapters before we can begin to add more chapters to our community

You're right that we have more fraternities than sororities but the size of each is dramatically smaller. A big fraternity has about 120 members, while an average sorority has close to 300. Also a higher percentage of girls enrolled at mizzou are in greek life than guys, so there goes that theory. The fraternity system isn't weak for being smaller, it provides ,men a tight nit brotherhood where people actually know everyone in the house on a personal level, unlike in sororities where most girls barely know half of their "sisters".

It sounds like the new houses aren't the problem. If the new houses were bad then they would fail and be removed from campus. If Zeta and KD are failing it's because girls have more options and aren't forced to join those houses anymore.

I was at dinner tonight and checked out a table of Sigma Chi men. Two of them easily cleared 300lbs. They looked YOUNG too. Sophomores tops. I honestly want to help them but like I don't know what to say without being a c-u-next-tuesday? I KNOW they weren't that big in high school. I honestly think some guys here have eating disorders...like binge eating disorder. I get there's the "freshman 15" but some guys are on a different level with it.

If more fraternities on campus would elevate their standards just a little bit it would make a big difference. Sororities attract the best and the brightest. Fraternities seem to attract drunks.

Sororities attract the drunks that show up to our parties. I don't know what makes you think fraternities don't attract the best and brightest. All over Mizzou the majority of the men representing MSA and all the other important mizzou organizations are in fraternities

Gosh, I don't know. Maybe it's because two-thirds of fraternities have GPAs below the all university average while EVERY Panhell sorority is above the all university average.

The best and the brightest in fraternities? Hardly. Most of my sorority sisters were so over frat bros by the end of sophomore year.
