two houses

by: wondering

I started out going through rush and went to all of the houses just once. Then I had to quit (funeral - my grandmother died). I hope to try again next year but I have a question. I know there are several really outstanding houses and that was apparent and we talked about them a lot in the dorm. But there are two houses that I don't know much about and I wonder if you could tell me more about them. Delta Gamma and Alpha Phi. They both seem to have been around a long time. What is their reputation?

Delta Gamma has a sordid past. They used to be a top house but they fell from grace about seven years ago because they got caught hazing. After that they had a strong of behavioral infractions with PHA including being removed from Greek Week two years ago among other things. However, this last year they really cleaned up their act. Stayed out of trouble and they're trying to improve their image. DG may not be the most popular on this website but personally the DG's I know are very nice, really sweet and generally great girls.

Alpha Phi was a bottom tier house that was a mess. Their nationals actually came in, made all the actives go alum and recruited an entirely new pledge class and started from scratch. After that, the girls they got were prettier and prettier every year. They're known for having good dancers.

Both houses are sort of party houses, both are considered middle tier, neither has amazing grades. Of the two, Alpha Phi is more generally liked but all in all, either house is a good choice.

Exactly when did this cleaning up take place? How long ago?

That's helpful. One more thing. I'm not much of a partier, so maybe those houses wouldn't be interested in me. I've been told I'm attractive and I was voted to homecoming court twice in high school. I also am a fairly serious student, got a 32 on my ACTs and was #3 in my graduating class of 525. Would I have a better chance with houses that might be interested in me because of my grades? What are those houses? I think I would make grade cuts.

You might want to aim for ADPi or AXO. I would say Theta but they are highly selective and do not like accepting sophomores. AXO is more relaxed, a little less selective and has a very diverse group. ADPi is a little more high strung, very athletic but very open minded.

My advice, based off what you've given me-

1. Keep your GPA up, this is the most important thing as a sophomore rushing. It will help you beat other girls in your same position if it's high

2. Keep an open mind, top houses might cut you just because you're a sophomore.

3. Aim for houses like ADPi, AXO and maybe Chi-O and KKG, KKG and Chi-O don't seem to discriminate against sophomores as much as the rest of the top tier

4. Keep an open mind. Believe it or not you will find friends in a "bottom tier" house if that's where you end up getting a bid.

It sounds as if some house will be proud to have you. Chi O, Theta, PiPhi and ADPi have pretty strict grade cuts, but if you keep your grades up (and that shouldn't be a problem, after all, this isn't Harvard) that won't be a problem. It also sounds as if you are attractive, articulate and humble, all of which are in your favor. The only thing working against you is that you will be rushing as a sophomore, but even those houses take a few token sophomores. Just keep your standards high and there's no reason you should have to settle for bottom tier.

is NOT settling! No one cares about tiers except on GR. You can find a home you will love. It's all about where you feel comfortable and are invited to join! Good luck to you!

Here's my two cents. The bottom tier might feel like you're settling at first but you're really not. I was in the same boat as you. Amazing GPA, cheerleader, part of Stu-Co, all that jazz. I had my two favorite houses and the bottom tier before the last round of cuts and on pref day I had SK, KD and Zeta. Of those three houses I really wanted to be a KD or an SK. My friend went SK a week earlier and seemed to like it and KD was my favorite of the three. Surprise! I get stuck with Zeta.

I almost didn't go to bid day. I felt cheated. Honestly, I hated everything about Zeta but I sucked it up and went. And I'm so glad I did. Yes, the top tier wins more competitions. But aside from that you will still get the greek experience in a bottom tier house.

My big had a girls night with me when I lost my job because they shut down and helped me forget about my troubles. My sisters keep me motivated and help me study. I always have friends to get lunch with. And no matter what house you join you will always have that. You can find friends in any house.

So yeah, I agree you sound like Chi-O/Kappa/AXO/ADPi material more then a house like mine. But if you were to have my house on pref, I'd hope you'd give us a shot. Same goes with any other house, bottom tier or not. You don't know you'll hate it until you give it a chance.
