plain truth please
by: outta state
I wish someone could tell me the simple plain truth about rush at Mizzou. I know an out of state PNM who is pretty, 3.4 GPA and felt like she connected with many girls in several houses. As of today, she got asked back to only 2 houses both of which she felt was not a good fit for her and didn't want to take the space from someone that really wanted in one of these houses. Therefore she is dropping out. So what is the real connection? High school friends? Must be in state & know many people? She had some references which apparently wasn't worth anything. I just don't get it!!!
To top it off as she was walking back to her dorm in the sorority t-shirt a group of frat guys were coming up the street behind her asking girls along the way if they got in a house. When they got to her and turned around to talk to her, one of the boys said "Awe i'm not even gonna ask you, your obviously in".
Just wondering what is it that the greek system is looking for? Perhaps just a continuation of high school? i'm very confused,

That there are amazing girls in EVERY house and your friend could have been one of them if she didn't feel too good for the ones that WANTED her. Some girls have been dropped altogether and would LOVE to have been invited anywhere. All PNM's are the new pledge class, so if she didn't look around her at those girls and find someone worthy of her friendship then she shouldn't be greek.

Ditto- Apparently there are many girls in this situation
? - You are obviously a greek student
Nig- Part of your comment is true, I'm sure every house will have a couple girls like you. Part of your comment is false, why is it okay for a house to say your not a good fit in less than 10 minutes but it's not okay for a PNM to say that after 3 visits? Also, is it possible that some PNM's ARE actually liked by some houses and that perhaps that PNM doesn't make it in because she may be outranked in her own house by someone older? Or holding an office? What goes on on the other side? There has to be girls in these houses that are sad to see their PNM's cut.
Thank You - You are obviously a greek student as well and perhaps someone currently or has experience working in this system
#- You speak the truth
Plain Truth Is - Not all PNM's are the new pledge class for any particular house one is standing in line for. I believe all PMN's are not allowed to skip any houses, true? So the people you are standing on the sidewalk with are not the people in that house. Especially when it's written all over this website that girls drop certain particular houses.

Mizzou does have a great greek system, no doubt. However what needs to happen here is a change at the administrative level. It has nothing to do with the current members or PNMs. Shame on the people in charge here. Why are there 2,000 girls rushing when at best at least 40% are going to be cut along with another 1%-9% dropping because of "not fitting" the stereotype or whatever of a certain house? So you have nearly 1,000 girls interested in the system here that are left high and dry? How good is that? It does not take an Einstein to figure out that the girls entering college in this decade are probably children of parent's whom were also greek. There are more girls applying to colleges now than boys. Why are there so many fraternities and so few sororities? Doesn't it make sense to try to accommodate such a huge interest, especially when hearing this has been a problem for a few years now? C'mon Mizzou really, do the math!!!!

A 3.4 is not that great, first of all. And while she may be pretty, as you look around you can see that pretty girls are a dime a dozen. What many girls don't know is that many houses weed out girls without ever having met them, based on things like class rank, recs, ACT score, honors, elected positions and more. It's the whole package and with so many girls going through, houses can be extremely selective. Plus, it's ability to hold a meaningful conversation, how warm and outgoing you are and whether you click with someone. Finally, it also matters whether you can contribute something to a house. Lots of cheerleaders go through rush, but how does that translate to helping a house the way a beautiful singing voice or ability to play the piano well helps. Lots of girls play soccer, but if you hold a record in an individual sport, that helps more. It's very difficult to figure out just what a house is looking for, but 5's on your AP tests and being No. 1 in your class helps more than just a 3.4,typical activities and a blah personality.

I'm the same situation. I came from out-of-state knowing no one. Except I'm super confused cause I had a 4.9 and was super involved in high school and had many leadership positions. I had good conversations at many houses that I got cut from. I only got asked back to the house with the worst grades and the one I had the least connection with. I respect the system and wished it worked out for me, but it didn't. People say rec letter and knowing people doesn't really affect your chances but honestly I think times are changing cause I had neither because everyone said they weren't necessary and that I'd be fine.

I'm in the same boat. I had a 3.7, great ACT score, and am excessively friendly and outgoing. I'm no 10, but not a 2 either. I am also a legacy to two great chapters at Mizzou. However, I know nobody here. I had a great recruitment up until today-where I only had two chapters, neither of which I felt passionate about or even really remembered. I had amazing conversations at my legacy houses and absolutely loved them. When I saw that neither of them were on my schedule, I was heartbroken. I truly believe that knowing people DOES help more than anybody cares to admit. I wish people had been more honest about this with me, so that I could have adjusted my expectations accordingly. And I know that people will say "you end up where you're supposed to" and "those weren't the chapters for you," but those comments disregard the feelings that PNMs have for houses. This process is much more one sided than it seems. I do not hate the Greek system, but I wholeheartedly believe that girls without connections are at a huge disadvantage in the recruitment process. It sucks, and it has caused a lot of tears, but it's a reality that needs to stop being oppressed.

Amen to this.
TRUST THE SYSTEM.
Like I said earlier.. why be in a house that doesn't want you in the first place?
It is a mutual selection process. You will find friends NO MATTER what house you are in.. Just be blessed that you're at a university that has such an amazing greek system.
Tell her not to drop. She will regret it.. & there's nothing worse than being in your dorm while everyone else is going to the quad on bid day.
