women of color

by:

Which houses, if any, are most likely to take women of color? I'm more interested in a traditional Panhellenic sorority but my Mom doesn't think I'll stand a chance being OOS and diversity. I would appreciate people being honest so I don't waste my time.

Wondering- I can only speak for my sorority personally, but race is not a factor. grades, how put together you are, your ability to interact with the women you meet, involvement in high school and confidence- those matter. But your race is NOT a factor. Unfortunately, the Greek system has a long history of being a pretty white-dominated system, so not that many diverse people choose to go through recruitment, but race is NOT an issue for getting cut from a chapter.

I am in the exact same position as you are! During Summer Welcome, I spoke with a lot of other girls from various cultural backgrounds who were interested in rushing. I think you should definitely rush anyways, and we'll be right there with you on bid day (hopefully)!!!

I am proud that when I look at the PNMs going through rush and when I see the women who are thrilled with their bids that there are many, many women of color. I will be honest, my house can get a bit critical during rush, but I have never, ever heard a discriminatory comment. We have minorities in our house and I am quite sure that's the case with every other house, too.

All houses take women of color. The reason there aren't a lot of WOC in Greek Life is simply because they don't rush in fear that their race will be held against them when in reality, grades, involvement and personality are the most important thing.

Fair warning, you will see a ton of skinny little blonde white girls when you rush. It may be intimidating and you might feel like you've made a mistake. But I'm half Korean and I stuck with it and got my second choice house. It might feel like you have no chance but houses do not discriminate based on race.

No house will discriminate on you based on race. I'm in a top tier house and we don't look for stereotypical blonde skinny girls. It's about who you are as a person, and how we think you'll fit in the house.

As a PNM, most of this site has been a turn-off (the nasty comments, most of which seem fictional shed a poor light on the Greek System) BUT there are bits of helpful info. like this string of comments. As a WOC, there were not many racially diverse girls at the Panhellenic info. meeting at Summer Welcome. However, I still plan to go through Recruitment and am hopeful. I really like to get involved and have a lot of leadership experience. If I am lucky enough to make it into a sorority, do I have a chance at all of holding an office, or being a Pi Chi, etc.??

Absolutely. In fact our new PHA president is part of the LGBTQ community and just last year we had another who didn't fall in the typical gender binary get nominated for homecoming court as a homecoming King, not a Queen.

I don't want to mislabel this wonderful greeks but I believe our new PHA president is genderqueer and the one who ran for King is trans? Again, please correct me if I'm wrong.

The point is that while the entire greek system may look a bit white washed, the only thing that will stop you from succeeding in our greek community is a lack of ambition on your part. The girls who hold office and such are the ambitious, driven ones. If you've got that, nothing should be able to stop you :)

I knew I'd screwed that up somehow. But yes, Mizzou is definitely at the forefront of breaking down the barriers of what is stereotypically considered "normal" in Greek Life.

Unfortunately the only thing houses discriminate on is being overweight. I was 30 pounds overweight for my petite frame and had good convos with girls and was disappointed I wasn't called back to my ideal houses, like pi phi.

Being overweight or not that great at doing your hair and makeup will get you points deducted in several top houses.

Some houses welcome diversity for sure! Other houses only take skinny blonde girls. Going through recruitment will help place you in a house that best fits you
