women of color
by: Wondering in WIWhich houses, if any, are most likely to take women of color? I'm more interested in a traditional Panhellenic sorority but my Mom doesn't think I'll stand a chance being OOS and diversity. I would appreciate people being honest so I don't waste my time.

Wondering- I can only speak for my sorority personally, but race is not a factor. grades, how put together you are, your ability to interact with the women you meet, involvement in high school and confidence- those matter. But your race is NOT a factor. Unfortunately, the Greek system has a long history of being a pretty white-dominated system, so not that many diverse people choose to go through recruitment, but race is NOT an issue for getting cut from a chapter.

I am in the exact same position as you are! During Summer Welcome, I spoke with a lot of other girls from various cultural backgrounds who were interested in rushing. I think you should definitely rush anyways, and we'll be right there with you on bid day (hopefully)!!!

I am proud that when I look at the PNMs going through rush and when I see the women who are thrilled with their bids that there are many, many women of color. I will be honest, my house can get a bit critical during rush, but I have never, ever heard a discriminatory comment. We have minorities in our house and I am quite sure that's the case with every other house, too.

Fair warning, you will see a ton of skinny little blonde white girls when you rush. It may be intimidating and you might feel like you've made a mistake. But I'm half Korean and I stuck with it and got my second choice house. It might feel like you have no chance but houses do not discriminate based on race.

As a PNM, most of this site has been a turn-off (the nasty comments, most of which seem fictional shed a poor light on the Greek System) BUT there are bits of helpful info. like this string of comments. As a WOC, there were not many racially diverse girls at the Panhellenic info. meeting at Summer Welcome. However, I still plan to go through Recruitment and am hopeful. I really like to get involved and have a lot of leadership experience. If I am lucky enough to make it into a sorority, do I have a chance at all of holding an office, or being a Pi Chi, etc.??
