Literally everything. Nothing else matters if not a single slum will support you.

It doesn't matter if you are intelligent, well rounded, beautiful, classy, and fun: if you don't have any recs, you're getting cut by the majority of houses.

You're an idiot. This isn't Alabama. We judge based on who the girl is, not what some alum who probably barely knows her has to say about her. My house is sometimes considered the top house on campus and many of us received bids without rec letters. So stop. You probably just weren't good enough for any houses so rec letter were the only crutch you had at all.

I didn't come to rush with a single recommendation and I'm in a top tier house. Helpful but not required.

If you can obtain a rec from an Alum who truly KNOWS you or your FAMILY, it is much more meaningful. In some houses, it will at least get you an invite back - especially if the rec is from a respected, involved Alum. It does get your name (and face if you include a photo) out there a bit more. It does not guarantee anything, but certainly doesn't hurt.
