freaking out

by:

I will be going through recruitment in August and I have to admit I am freaking out about it. I have excellent grades, a 31 ACT, honors and awards and I generally make friends easily. But I am somewhat quiet and thoughtful and don't always think well on my feet. I guess I'm not sure what to expect and I'm worried. My grandmother, mother and sister have all been in sororities (I'm a PiPhi and Alpha Phi legacy) and I have seen firsthand the wonderful, lasting friends they have made. And I've heard about the fun they had in college, in large part because of the sisterhoods they joined. I definitely want that experience, too. But I'm FREAKING OUT. Help!!!!!

Unfortunately appearance is a big deal so present yourself well, but more importantly relax, be yourself and have fun. Ask questions about Mizzou, classes, ask the Rusher what she loves about her sorority, their philanthropy etc. Smile and you'll be fine.

You should read the Rush 101: Q&A, then take a deep breath and go for it, but remember: with around 1600 girls going through, 1 in 3 make it in. You look like you're off to a good start if you have "excellent " grades and are a legacy. Good luck.

I came to Mizzou two years ago from way out of state and knew NO ONE. I thought joining a sorority was the best way for me to make friends right away and stick with them for much of my college career. It was the best decision I ever made. I, too, had great grades and lots of honors. I'm not saying I sailed through rush, but it was a great experience. I am a Kappa legacy but I couldn't see myself in that house. Instead I pledged another great house and couldn't be happier. Here is my advice: plan ahead about what you might talk about if there is a lull in the conversation; look your best (but don't do anything weird with your hair or makeup because it won't last in 90-degree heat); SMILE (even when your feet hurt); and ask questions to show you are interested. Quiet people sometimes give off a vibe as if they are aloof, and you don't want that. And give yourself a little pep talk each morning. You have a lot to offer a sorority; now it's time to reach out and try something new. What have you got to lose? If you don't try, you can't win.

^^^^^^^ Very sweet. And right on the mark. After all, isn't that what college is for? Trying new things?

Honestly, your Pi Chis will tell you the same thing I'm about to: you have to trust the system. Although PNMs sometimes slip through the cracks (it's not perfect) but if you don't get into a house, you probably are better off not in one. There are girls that have their hearts set on getting into a house, and end up devastated when they're dropped only to find out that they probably wouldn't have fit in anyway. Just go in a be the best version of yourself that you can be and it really will work itself out for the better.

If you really want to go Greek , there is a place for you. Keep an open mind and, remember, even the worst houses on this campus can compete with the best on another campus. Our system is the envy of other colleges around the country. Let it work for you and, I promise, you will find sisters who care about you and who will make your college experience outstanding. It sounds as if you have a lot to offer and, trust me, we will figure that out. Be yourself, trust yourself and smile!
