Pretty, involved party girls but pretty bad grades

They are CONSTANTLY on this site self-promoting. The truth is that Alpha Phi was a very weak house in the past, their Nationals came VERY close to closing the Mizzou chapter and they were not desired by many going through Recruitment. But, over the past several years, they've improved their reputation (mainly through looks & getting a few Golden Girls - which almost all houses have) and now are decent. Most are fairly nice but they need to quit self-ranking!

Their reorganization (1998) basically was a closing without pulling the charter -- all the actives were forced to go alum so APhi national could recruit a brand-new chapter from scratch. The chapter was struggling badly, and national felt reorganizing was better than shutting down and then having to wait for years to recolonize.

APhi did the very same thing with the chapters at Cornell, Duke, and UVA around the same time. All came back strong and are considered top/upper-mid groups today.

Thank you Miss Alpha Phi for being so defensive. Go back to self ranking.

What about grades though? Also would recommendations help with them?

Grades are extremely poor. Honestly, that's what keeps aphi from being in top tier. I don't think they have a grade cut off and don't require their members to keep any certain GPA. But they are always in the bottom 4 or 5 of all the sororities. Maybe they should think about changing that...

Are they very hard to get into? If they don't cut for grades what type of things do they cut girls for?

Despite what most people say: WE DO HAVE A GRADE CUT. Yes, it's lower than most houses, but it has changed. They've become much more strict after we basically embarrassed all of the Mizzou alumni in 2012 due to our grades. I'll be honest about our GPA, it's lower than other houses (3.2 in spring 2014, Theta was #1 with a 3.4), but we do have a grade requirement.

Our stereotype: We're known as a house full of pretty girls, we kinda give the girl-next-door vibe, we know how to have a good time, and, yes, we're not the smartest.

We aren't as selective as other houses, necessarily, but we are selective just like very other house. I've seen girls cut for grades, personality, and just because we don't see her fitting in well here.

As glad as I am that you're considering us, remember to go through rush with an open mind!

Yes. We focus more on attractiveness and girls who seem fun and easy to get along with. We don't like drama so if you're a drama queen and you know it don't expect to stay long. But to answer your question, grades aren't our top priority DURING recruitment

It is so idiotic that 3.4 is considered "so smart they don't have any fun" and 3.2 is "omg sooo stupid." It is a .2 difference. Most sororities GPAs are within a few points of each other, even tri sig and sigma kappa are all above 3.0.

You're right, no sorority is stupid, but it's the houses that work a little harder for that extra .2 or .3 or .4 or .1113 or whatever that just seem a little smarter. Grades ARE a competitive thing in our Greek system, even by those small margins. Does it mean that sororities with slightly lower gpas are all just a bunch of stupid girls? No no no. But they will attract less book savy girls as compared to a house like theta.

You really shouldn't be asking about stereotypes because even though there is a little truth to most, a lot are just rumors. EVERY. SINGLE. HOUSE. has a good stereotype and a bad stereotype. Don't focus on either and just go through recruitment and see how you like the girls. You should join a house because you click with your sisters and you're happy there, not because of how it'll make you look to some people on campus.... don't be stupid.
