faq for incoming rushes
by: Here
This website is great for girls going through rush who may not know anyone in mizzous Greek system already and have a lot of unanswered questions. Before you ask your question in a new thread though, please read this:
Your GPA is a huge determining factor. However, your GPA is NOT everything. For those worrying because their gpa is below a 3.5, which is typically the grade cut for top houses, stop worrying. There are ALWAYS acceptions to grade cuts. Focus on making your resume as unique and interesting as you can an make sure your presentation is top notch.
If you're a junior, your chances of getting into a house are slim. Houses like full commitments so they want you for more than two years. Sophomores, as long as your gpa is roughly at least a 2.8, you should try rushing. Being a sophomore can be a slight set back and I can't say for sure which houses will take you seeing as I'm only in one house and only know my houses rules, but every house has taken sophomores at some point.
Your presentation and resume are the most important things that you have the most control of right now. You can't control what your gpa is at the moment because you're not taking classes. You can't control your age. Those things are what they are. However you can emphasize yourself as a person. Dress nicely, brush your hair, put some make up on. Look nice. Don't wear anything fake. If you can't afford expensive bags and watches, don't try and fake it. You'll look like a try hard. Just be genuine

Make your resume as neat and unique as possible. Make it interesting to look at. Try not to use a template. Pinterest some resume ideas and try to mimick them. Often times if you're cut from a house on day one, you were already cut before you even spoke to a girl inside just from your resume. We often predetermine using your resumes and NO it's not always just your gpa. Sometimes we do predetermined cuts based on gpa but not everyone that doesn't make grade cuts gets cut as I stated already. If your resume is awesome, you present yourself well and you seem like a great fit we just might keep you around.
Legacies are a big deal. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Being a legacy helps a lot. It doesn't EVER guarantee anything, but it helps. That's all I can say about legacies. If your grades suck and you don't brush your hair but you're still a legacy, that's not gonna cut it.
Finally, THIS ISNT THE DIRTY SOUTH. Rec letters ARE NOT a do or die. If you have a family friend or a family member who really knows you personally and is willing to write a rec, go for it. It could help. But if you're just contacting random women you don't know or barely know, we really don't need the extra paper clutter. If the woman doesn't know you, how can she recommend you? Just take my advice and don't send one if you don't really know the alum. We won't cut you for it of course but it is annoying and just a waste of time for everyone especially yourself.

"There are ALWAYS acceptions to grade cuts..." Yes, and EXCEPTIONS, too. And while this person may speak for her own house, these things are not universally true. Recs are important in my house. We won't sign someone without one. We can scramble and get an alum to do it in house, but we would rather know more about a PNM from another perspective. If you don't know someone well who might write a rec for you, GET TO KNOW THEM. Ask her to go out for a cup of coffee at Starbucks and tell her about your hopes and dreams. And legacies? They're a dime a dozen. We could fill an entire pledge class with legacies, but we won't. We will guarantee a second look, but after that you're on your own and you will have to meet or beat the competition.
