faq for incoming rushes

by:

This website is great for girls going through rush who may not know anyone in mizzous Greek system already and have a lot of unanswered questions. Before you ask your question in a new thread though, please read this:

Your GPA is a huge determining factor. However, your GPA is NOT everything. For those worrying because their gpa is below a 3.5, which is typically the grade cut for top houses, stop worrying. There are ALWAYS acceptions to grade cuts. Focus on making your resume as unique and interesting as you can an make sure your presentation is top notch.

If you're a junior, your chances of getting into a house are slim. Houses like full commitments so they want you for more than two years. Sophomores, as long as your gpa is roughly at least a 2.8, you should try rushing. Being a sophomore can be a slight set back and I can't say for sure which houses will take you seeing as I'm only in one house and only know my houses rules, but every house has taken sophomores at some point.

Your presentation and resume are the most important things that you have the most control of right now. You can't control what your gpa is at the moment because you're not taking classes. You can't control your age. Those things are what they are. However you can emphasize yourself as a person. Dress nicely, brush your hair, put some make up on. Look nice. Don't wear anything fake. If you can't afford expensive bags and watches, don't try and fake it. You'll look like a try hard. Just be genuine

Make your resume as neat and unique as possible. Make it interesting to look at. Try not to use a template. Pinterest some resume ideas and try to mimick them. Often times if you're cut from a house on day one, you were already cut before you even spoke to a girl inside just from your resume. We often predetermine using your resumes and NO it's not always just your gpa. Sometimes we do predetermined cuts based on gpa but not everyone that doesn't make grade cuts gets cut as I stated already. If your resume is awesome, you present yourself well and you seem like a great fit we just might keep you around.

Legacies are a big deal. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Being a legacy helps a lot. It doesn't EVER guarantee anything, but it helps. That's all I can say about legacies. If your grades suck and you don't brush your hair but you're still a legacy, that's not gonna cut it.

Finally, THIS ISNT THE DIRTY SOUTH. Rec letters ARE NOT a do or die. If you have a family friend or a family member who really knows you personally and is willing to write a rec, go for it. It could help. But if you're just contacting random women you don't know or barely know, we really don't need the extra paper clutter. If the woman doesn't know you, how can she recommend you? Just take my advice and don't send one if you don't really know the alum. We won't cut you for it of course but it is annoying and just a waste of time for everyone especially yourself.

Do we need to submit our resumes when we are signing up for rush week or do we need to bring them with us the week of rush week?

You'll submit them during registration.

"There are ALWAYS acceptions to grade cuts..." Yes, and EXCEPTIONS, too. And while this person may speak for her own house, these things are not universally true. Recs are important in my house. We won't sign someone without one. We can scramble and get an alum to do it in house, but we would rather know more about a PNM from another perspective. If you don't know someone well who might write a rec for you, GET TO KNOW THEM. Ask her to go out for a cup of coffee at Starbucks and tell her about your hopes and dreams. And legacies? They're a dime a dozen. We could fill an entire pledge class with legacies, but we won't. We will guarantee a second look, but after that you're on your own and you will have to meet or beat the competition.

On the legacy thing, that's very direspectful to say. You should suggest to your house to focus on them more because legacies can be very important to some families. I believe the OP stated legacies are not a guarantee either. But they should be important.

As for recs, what PNM or woman honestly has the time? Some girls are working full time just to pay for a sorority... This isn't Beverly Hills where everyone lives off daddy's money. Some girls just don't have the time, money or desire to do that. What if not one PNM came in with a rec letter? Would you just not have a pledge class? I know for a fact you hve probably had pnms in your house that did not have a rec. Because some of the best girls don't need them.

first, what do rec letters have to do with "daddys money"? Second, in what world does working full time have anything to do with your ability to get rec letters? The bottom line is do not expect a call back from a top house without a rec letter unless you are an already outstanding PNM. I got into my house without a rec because I had a pretty good resume and connections in the house, however -- as we are preparing for recruitment, i can tell you it is very helpful to have recs (nothing crazy like 5 per house, just one or two is plenty).

You just proved the OPs point... You don't NEED a rec to get into a house. That's just the fact. Girls don't need to freak out of they dot know someone in a particular house they're interested in. OP is saying if you don't personally know someone, don't bother trying to get them to write some forged rec letter just so you can "have a rec letter". The point is, make it a quality letter or don't send one at all. Simple as that. She never said it wouldn't help you, it will if it's a quality rec by an alum who actually knows you. The other girl said some girls don't have the time to try and sit down with 15 women and get to know them so they can write a slightly more quality letter.... Again, point is, don't go out of your way to get a rec from someone you don't even know. It's about as good as not having one at all for most houses. I got into my top house without one. I'm sure other girls can too.

SO, rec letters: they can help if they're quality and by someone who really genuinely knows your character. They really won't matter much in the decision making process if the alum checks "I don't know this person" on her form or writes, "I've never met her but she seems great" If you have time, get to know these alumni and get some recs for your favorite houses. If you don't, don't stress. If you're already confident in yourself you won't need someone's letter to get you into a house.

If you are interested in getting into a top house, why would you NOT take the time and effort to get a rec? Seems like a no brainer to me.

Because some people realize that Greek life is only 4 years of their lives and then everyone moves on so some girls don't care what house they're in believe it or not.

Also, as a woman in a top house myself, I literally didn't have one rec letter. So your argument is irrelevant

Call PHA. Don't rely on this website for all your answers. We only know so much. PHA changes things every year when it comes to recruitment details

I signed up for recruitment this year as well and I believe that the information that you had to fill out (extracurriculars, community service...) was basically the resume.
