sorority rec letters

Hi! So many of us rushing in August are confused about rec letters, so I'm wondering if someone on the inside could help! The school says they're not required and that' it's actually not even our responsibility to get letters... However, many of us are confused because some houses have said they won't take a girl without one... Could someone who has been through the process explain what is actually needed? Thanks!!
