rush 101: q&a

Here are some common questions and answers that are asked about Rush, I figured we could get one giant board going and let this be the go-to place to ask and answer questions. Fellow Greeks, feel free to add your own info/advice.
Q: What's the lowest GPA I can have and still have a chance to get a bid?
A: I'd say 3.0 for incoming freshmen and 2.8 for in college or transfers. Though these are the low cuts. Anything above a 3.5 for an incoming freshmen or a 3.3 for an in college or transfer would be good
Q: What are grade cuts? How do they affect me?
A: Every house has a minimum GPA they will accept for a PNM to have when they join their house. They usually range anywhere from 3.5-3.2 but they do not drop below the 3.0 line. If you're below a houses GPA cut, they probably won't give you a bid. Some houses cut you for your GPA before you even walk in the door.
Q: Is it hard to Rush as a sophomore/junior/transfer
A: Yes. It's not impossible but some houses will cut you just for that reason. Be prepared.
Q: Does everyone get a bid?
A: No. Mizzou has the second largest rush in the Nation. We had 1,700 girls go through last year and we simply don't have enough houses to give everyone a bid.

Q: I heard a nasty rumor about 'XYZ' sorority, what's the deal with that?
A: Don't pay attention. The only rumors worth acknowledging are the ones that you can find hard facts about on the PHA website, such as grades/social restrictions/etc. Rumors are rumors for a reason.
Q: Any last minute tips/tricks?
A: Carry a small mirror in your bag and any make-up essentials you might wants, it gets hot and you might need them. Utilize your Pi Chi, she's there to help. Make friends with your Pi Chi group, some of them are your future sisters! And my biggest piece of advice is to pack a pair of flats on Pref Day. You'll hate yourself if you're running around Greek Town in the sweltering heat in heels. Trust me on the last one.

Those are all so important. Especially the curly hair thing, don't try and straighten it if you know it won't hold in the humidity. Simply put, you'll look like you barely got ready in the morning.
And the advice about buying your shoes not perfectly snug, I wish I had known that when I rushed.

While I think it's good to look presentable you don't have to be psychotic and paranoid about it all week either.... I think most girls would understand the weather condition and there also isn't a whole lot of time to touch up your make up and hair until lunch. No need to lose your mind over constantly looking like you're ready for a pageant. Then you just look like you're trying too hard.

Q. What if I get cut early in the week by a house I had my heart set on?
A. Lots of girls will drop out at this point, but don't do it. Stick it out and if you feel on the last day that there really isn't a place you would feel comfortable, then drop. But every house has something to offer and in a competitive system like ours there are no bad houses. So give the process a chance. What have you got to lose? You might be pleasantly surprised. There are hundreds of women in Greektown who wound up in a house they never imagined they would join and they are extremely happy. Trust yourself and your instincts. Learning to do that is a big part of growing up. You might as well start now.

Q: I got cut from my favorite house. Should I just drop and COB in the Spring?
A: NO. NO. NO. For many reasons. First, your favorite house might not be COBing in the Spring. Secondly, I'm sure there are other houses you like! I'd say only one in twenty girls get their first choice house at the end of the week. But I'd say about eighteen out of twenty girls love the house they end up in regardless of if it was their first choice or not. You will find your sisters in whatever house you end in up. DO NOT drop in the middle of the week just because your favorite house cut you.

No, she's right, if all 1,700 girls stuck around the entire week then not everyone will get a bid. But thankfully due to girls dropping we usually have enough spots for everyone.

Oh man. You are dumb ^ quota is determined based on how many girls we have going threw. 1500 girls makes quota 100. 1300 girls makes quota in the 80s. We had around 1400 girls rush not 1700. Where the f are you getting that number. Quota was 89 I believe. So everyone could get a bid from a house. Many girls dropped because they wanted a certain house that they were cut from HENCE the reason some houses don't make quota. Stop being stupid.

No need to be mean to anyone who doesn't understand quota, I've been here three years and I still don't understand it completely. The point is that "No" is right, if we wanted to give bids to everyone who rushed because we usually have enough girls drop out of recruitment so that each house can get around eighty girls.
However, you can get all the way through the week without getting a bid if your grades prevent you from it happening. Or in extremely fair cases, you can not make the bid list to any house on your last day. It is very, very, very rare but it happens sometimes.

take a pen and a piece of paper. It's crazy that week, but take a few moments to jot down notes after each house or when you're on a break. I was so tired and confused after the first day it was helpful for me to refer to notes. Seems dumb, I know, but it helped me a lot.

And take good notes. Good notes are something like this.
- Label which day you're talking about
- Who you talked to/if you got a good vibe
- Something that stuck out about the house or the outfits the girls wore to help you remember
- Some sort of ranking system, hearts, stars, numbers out of five.
So it could look something like this.
Phi Phi Phi: Day #1
Talked to Jennifer about our favorite movies and our majors, good vibe, conversation went smoothly. The girls were all wearing gold headbands. 4/5 experience.
Or like this for a bad one
Alpha Alpha Alpha: Day #1
Talked to Monica about drinking, wouldn't let me change the subject and talked over me the whole time. The house with the daisies around the mailbox. Didn't feel comfortable, 1/5. Possible bottom three for prefing.

So according to the recruitment guidelines, if you're going to be a sophomore in college, do you still submit all of your high school information and a transcript from that, and then you just have to put your college GPA but not provide a transcript? I'm a little confused on what to do.

When I rushed I put my college info on there but I'm not 100% sure on the protocol now because it was three years ago for me.

And remember, feet swell in the heat (so do fingers!). So when you are buying shoes for rush this summer, don't buy them if they aren't instantly comfortable.
Also, and this is important for out-of-state girls from northern states, there is nothing like August heat in Missouri. It's humid, sticky and sometimes stinky. Bring along a little spray bottle of light cologne. If you have curly hair, embrace it and wear a casual up-do. If you have straight hair don't do anything too drastic with it expecting hair spray to keep it fresh. You will look like your grandmother's helmet hair. And bring a little loose powder and a puff to blot your face. Otherwise you will feel like your makeup is sliding off, and who needs that?
