How much do letters of recommendation help during formal recruitment?

Depends. Yes, your name will be front and center but I know for a fact that some sororities are trying to get away from legacies and requiring rec letters. Just know that it can help but its definitely not a requirement. Hope this helps!

Not automatically accepting legacies and paying attention to recs are two completely different things. We hold our legacies to the same standard as everyone else going through recruitment; they don't have an advantage. But we pay close attention to recs because they provide true insight into a PNM that the basic rush form doesn't provide.

How old are you? Nobody pays "close attention to recs". There are too damn many of them! We look to see if we have one, match it up with a pnm, make sure the box on the form is not checked DO NOT RECOMMEND, and check her off. Nobody reads every word for some "true insight" on a pnm.

Recs mostly regurgitate info we already have and the vast majority are written by women who are practically strangers to the pnm. THIS IS WHY THEY HARDLY MATTER ANY MORE. We only pay real attention to a rec if it's from a recent or involved alum or someone else we are close with.

Try to get recs because most pnm's do get them. For a lot of sororities it doesn't have to be from an alum any more.
