Recommendations for Sorority Recruitment

by: Tigerlily

I have heard different answers to this question. Do I need to get recommendations for each sorority and if so, when do they have to be in? No one I know has ever been on the Greek system so I’m new at this. And a little confused

The recruitment form is very basic. Information about high school grades is meaningless because private schools seem to hand out A's like candy, as long as the check doesn't bounce. So recs from former members is your best bet to really stand apart. Make sure they are written by someone who truly knows you and can eloquently tell why you are someone a house would be proud to recruit.

From my experience in recruitment, my recommendations didn’t seem to help at all so I wouldn’t stress too much about it! But what the other comment said, if you know someone in a sorority at Mizzou already or are really close to someone who’s an alumni, I’d definitely still do that! Good luck!!!

Will a rec get you a bid? Never. Will it show interest and effort in that sorority and get your name in front of them? Yes. Do you need one? Well 'need' is not the right word, but if something can give you an edge then why not.

Active sorority members in the recruiting chapter do not write recommendations. But if you know of someone from your high school or home town or friends of friends, or any other connection then you could reach out somehow and let them know you are coming through. Those personal connections are far better than recs.

Alumnae write recs, and many sororities also allow an active from a different chapter to write recs as well as a non-affiliated third party who knows the pnm well, such as a teacher, school counselor, volunteer coordinator, boss, coach, etc. And I bet you do know women who have been Greek, like your teachers and neighbors etc. And men know Greek women too, their wives, mothers, sisters, etc. Put out some feelers.

Recs should be in by the end of July at the very latest but the sooner now the better. Actives start looking at recs way before recruitment starts.
