sorority rush

by:

Having just gone through rush almost a year ago and spending the past year in greek life here at Mizzou these are just some things I think are important.

Rankings really don’t matter on campus, Greek life as a whole is a huge deal at Mizzou and being a part of a chapter is about so much more than their rank on just ONE campus in the entire country.

It’s in your best interest to talk to girls in sororities on campus but take everything they say with a grain of salt. Although most will be as unbiased as possible, most love their chapters and it’s sometimes hard to separate yourself from the girls you spend practically all your time with. It’s definitely difficult to get to know an entire house of 250+ girls in such a short amount of time each day but take it all in during recruitment and trust the system.

-GET REC LETTERS
-Just because you’re a legacy doesn’t mean they won’t cut you
-CLEAN YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA
-Put your best foot forward
-Don’t talk about the houses, it gets back to the chapters much faster than you think
-be positive throughout the week
-be yourself and follow your gut instincts
Each house on this campus has smart, funny, pretty, sweet, social girls that have amazing sisterhoods. Go into rush open-minded and you’ll find the house that’s right for you. I know girls who are 100% happy with their “bottom tier” pick and girls absolutely hate their “top tier” house. Disregard what you hear and choose the house that that you can see yourself becoming a part of.

Rec letters can boost your chances slightly but they seriously aren't that important. Don't waste a lot of time with these. If you personally know a woman that is an alum of a house you may be interested in and she likes you and actually KNOWS you, by all means go ahead and get that letter. But if you don't personLly know anyone and you're just randomly asking alumni to write you letters based on your resume, I know my chapter overlooks those. They don't have much meaning. Sure you took the time to find some random woman who doesn't know you send us a form stating she THINKS you'd fit in from what she sees on paper but she doesn't know and nor does she care, then you might as well just not send it. And for the love of God do not send more than two per house.... Don't swarm us. We get you want to solidify a spot in our house but it takes a hell of a lot more than random women sending us letters to get that spot

In lower tier houses recs might not be important because they have a smaller pool of PNMs from which to choose. But if you are top-tier material, recs are extremely important. In a sea of girls with high gpa's, 30+ ACTs, pretty faces and great tans, you need SOMETHING that will help set you apart. A nicely written rec from someone who really knows you (or your family) is a plus and might be just the thing that puts you at the top of the bid list. But I agree, two per house is enough and try to provide enough information to the person writing the rec so that it doesn't seem like it is coming from some random woman.

It's the opposite. By the end of the week the top tier houses have less girls because THEY cut girls and are being picky so Rec's don't matter as much as the individual girl. By the end of the week all the girls who got cut everywhere else end up at Sigma/Phi Mu/Zeta and SK so there are a TON of them. Recs help in this case because if your score is tied with somebody else who's at risk of being cut, a Rec can save you.

Yes, but do bottom tier houses really cut anyone? Seems to me that the top tier houses do the cutting and when they are left with outstanding girls, there needs to be something besides a high GPA and a smoking hot vocabulary to set you apart.
