sorority rush

by: ?¿?¿

I'm an out of state girl looking to rush a sorority. I don't have any legacy connections or anything like that. How important is knowing people in the sorority?

It depends on the sorority. There are houses who like to pledge people just like them, and so "who you know" matters. They have lots of St. Louis private school girls who haven't figured out yet that they're not that special, and they like to surround themselves with others who think they're special, too. Then there are houses that pride themselves on diversity and are looking for the very best girls, no matter where they are from. They also tend to have a lot of out-of-state girls, so, clearly, it doesn't matter "who you know" for these houses because many out-of-state girls don't know anyone before they get to Columbia. I am from way out-of-state and didn't know anyone before I pledged. I would say a third of my pledge class was from outside of Missouri. We all get along fine and I think our house is well-respected.

I came from out of state knowing absolutely no one at Mizzou. If you spin it the right way, it can make you stand out in a positive way! I got my first choice house, which is considered upper mid or top depending on who you ask. I did have legacy connections to two houses, but I didn't end up joining either of them. You'll be fine as long as you're outgoing and have something to offer a house! Every house has diverse, out of state girls, some just have more than others.
