Can Mizzou still sustain 15 sororities?

by:

Is there just not enough girls going greek to support membership for 15 chapters? I’m curious if tri sigma’s decline had to do with too much competition, or if it was more their own doing? I can’t anticipate them not losing their charter after this year. If PHA made created an interest group to have another sorority come to campus would they also struggle? Maybe chapters with stronger national support like Alpha Gamma Delta, Delta Zeta, Alpha Omicron Pi could be comparably more successful than tri sigma at Mizzou. I’m sure PHA has had to have questioned if they’ll be good with 14 chapters or if it will make the community look better if tri sigma can be replaced. No one else has needs or plans for renovations or a new house for the 24-25 school year, and it would be a shame if a frat ended up buying that house once no one else has any use for renting it. If a lot of the quality girls who fell through the cracks during recruitment and a couple of willing upperclassmen became founding members maybe it could turn into a chapter that could at the very least make quota and not have serious retention issues.

5ish years ago there were talks of DZ coming to campus, but nothing came of it.

Mizzou has had such a strong sorority system for such a long time that it is very difficult for a new chapter to establish itself. So they are always on the outside looking in. Their actual houses (structures) often aren't up to the standards of the more established houses and their alum network is non-existent. Plus some of the nationals just aren't that strong. I think Mizzou can support 15 houses, but they have to be good houses. Plus, nationals like SK, PhiMu and Tri Sig just aren't that good. You can find those chapters on small campuses all around the country and there is no prestige involved in being a member. Sad but true. There is a reason SK failed a couple of times before its current incarnation here and that AGD tried and failed many years ago. DZ and AOPi nationals aren't any better. The best houses are the ones that have been here forever. There's a reason they remain strong. New houses struggle and often don't make it, and that's OK. Survival of the fittest.

Does Phi Mu really not have a strong Nationals? I’ve heard they are a top house in the south.

Their National sucks and they are not a top house. Anywhere. You can find it on all sorts of small, irrelevant campuses. No prestige there.

Sad but true for AOII. They were the “dorm ago because the alum promised them a house and never delivered.

mizzou had aopii in the 80's they failed for the same reasons tri sig did. its hard to have a strong standing when you're established in 2009. tri sig also didn't have payment plans for members and a lot dropped due to strict finicals. their sisterhood isn't strong because they took the pnms that were the leftovers during recrutiment, and they never had a strong holding at Mizzou because people dont want to associate with tri sigs. harsh but its the truth.

But SK came in 2012, and though they’re nothing close to the top, they can at least have enough membership to not appear desolate and aren’t afraid to mention that’s their sorority. A brand new chapter isn’t going to be spectacular, but they should be able to do as well as SK to stay afloat. They’re a realistic acceptable standard. Secondly, the home of the homeless archetype tri sigma isn’t conducive for sorority life. There needs to be some standard of selectivity and I think that comes down to the type of girls the a national sorority selects to start a colony

Many sororities on this campus have been here for more than 100 years. That's part of what makes the Mizzou Greek System so outstanding. Newer houses, though, don't have a very good track record. Many limp along until they just fade away. There is an exception, though, and that's KD. Compared to the old, established houses, KD is a relative newcomer that has done an excellent job of establishing and keeping its identity. It keeps its standards high and never settles for just taking the leftovers. There's a reason it's a strong, respected house on this campus. Some of the older houses could learn something about setting a high standard. You know who you are.

by: Agreed

I agree. KD just made total which, as one of the newest sororities on campus, makes them a strong house.

KD is just an ok house. They are solid enough to survive on campus and retain enough members, but they don’t have the same prestige and general allure as most of the other houses. All super nice girls though.

Making quota doesn’t mean anything. Most houses make quota on bid day. SK and Phi Mu are pretty much the only houses that have trouble filling a PC. KD does pretty much get leftovers. They’re like a less academic, more awkward group of Theta/ADPi type girls. Just being honest

KD is one of the top houses for GPA. You don't even go here do you? They made total, you don't even know what that is. That's above quota and that means they are full and can't take more members. You know how they are now one the top 7 houses??? Their members stay. They consistency place in homecoming and greek week. They get quality women and they keep them, more than all of the other houses. You can't argue with numbers and facts. The best thing about them, they don't care about their ratings or what people think. They do their own sisterhood, their own way. I am an PiPhi drop. I regret not being a KD. Many of us, even those in houses wish we were a KD. People like them, they are nice. Everyone knows they have the best sisterhood and when it comes down to what really matters in a sorority, KD beat them all. It's time to give them their moment. They earned it.

KD is usually somewhere in the middle for grades with occasional good semesters like all houses have. This is all public information. Google the scorecards. Also nobody cares about hoco and greekweek…..Never once has a PNM chosen a house because they were good at Greek week or hoco lol. They retain members the same way any other house would, this is also evident in the scorecards. So yes congrats KD, you’re doing better than SK and Phi Mu, but you aren’t some standout among the other houses in any way and you don’t have much of an identity which hurts you during recruitment.

Technically Alpha Phi has only been around since 1998. They came to campus in 1910 but went inactive for a long time and recolonized in 1998 from what I was told. They’re also doing really well for a “new” sorority

Actually, APhi was not inactive for a "long time." Apparently APhi nationals came in and put all the girls in alumni staus and then did a recolonization the next fall (1998) after formal recruitment.

While I would never consider APhi a good house (iffy retention and no grade cuts), they have been here forever, with the exception of one bad year, and they have a significant alumni network. That's important and something that the newer houses don't have. Now, if only those alums would insist on higher standards.

Hasn’t phi mu also been here forever but still struggles quite a bit? I feel like the general success of a house primarily depends on the chapters national support. Phi mu is pretty big in the south but other than that their presence is bleak. Their nationals probably pour all their resources into the old traditional southern schools like alabama.

I also once read somewhere that the “7 sisters” hold the strongest connections, money and power nationally in Greek life which are:

Kappa kappa gamma
Pi beta phi
Kappa alpha theta
Delta delta delta
Alpha phi
Delta gamma
Alpha delta pi

Just thought that was interesting. I know it’s different everywhere, but at most schools, these do appear to typically be the strong houses!

A friend of mine who is in Phi Mu told me that the Mizzou Chapter closed a LONG time ago (1960's?), but their alumni were smart enough to keep the house and rent it out to pay the mortgage (it was the LXA house for quite a while).

The fact that they own their house is probably been a big difference from the other sororities that tried to come back to Mizzou but failed.

Your seven sisters thing is way off base. First of all, ADPi was not in that group, it included Gamma Phi Beta. Then after a few years AXO and XO joined. This was the beginning of the NPC. That's all and there's really nothing more to it. I'm in one of these and it's NBD at all nationally. Everything depends on the school.

by: Why oh why?

Why is it that every time Gamma Phi opens its mouth it exposes its ignorance? Of course ADPi is one of the Seven Sisters. It was established on this campus in 1915 and has been a strong house ever since. GPhi, on the other hand, arrived in 1921 and has had many years when it struggled. It almost had its charter pulled, in fact.

If Gamma Phi isn't mentioned, it's inserted in the thread. If Gamma Phi is mentioned and they don't like how, they will blow up a thread and attack any house mentioned. Now they think they were a part of the 7 sisters when clearly, that is false. I really hope these aren't members because this not a good look.

The seven sisters are accurate. Those are nationally the richest and most well connected houses with if I had to guess probably Tri Delta, KKG and maybe Aphi leading the pack. There are very few campuses where these houses would be classified as bottom tier houses which means they have the resources not only to stay afloat but to thrive. Gamma Phi Beta might be good at mizzou but nationally they’re nothing to brag about.

What are you calling Seven Sisters? There were a group of sororities nationally that started the NPC. Is there another one that you are talking about?

Phi mu isn’t a top choice, but they do have an established identity, very sisterhood oriented and they’ve been better about recruiting girls who fit into that. My only criticism is they have a habit of alienating girls who are really involved in the Mizzou social/party scene and have a notable social media presence and are a bit more strict than most other chapters. A lot of my friends in it have gotten sent to standard for the pettiest reasons.

If you weren’t in the house you’re in now, what other house would you want to be in and why? Honest answers only, please no self promotion!

If I wasn’t in my current house, I’d want to be in Tri Delt. I love that they work with St. Jude and they all seem to be really invested in their work with them. I also think they have a really underrated sisterhood as I see many lifelong friendships forming there. Many of them also seem very ambitious and overall positive women.

To answer the question, yes we can sustain 15 sororities but will we, probably not. The remaining houses will all continue to be strong solid chapters and with only 14, the remaining houses can be even more selective. It benefits them while our PHA system will become even stronger. I think people forget that even tri sig had more members, at the end, than half the frats on campus. 14 sororities have at least a thousand members more than the almost 30 frats we have. The question should be why do we continue to tolerate a subpar IFC, with subpar frats on campus? And why do we judge, rank and put pressure on 14 extreme strong, competitive and intelligent sororities while completely ignoring the dumpster fire frats we have.

By: Yes

I hope we get another sorority, if only to keep the tri sig house from falling into the hands of some nasty frat boys that will destroy it.

It's about time frats get put in their place. Instead of coming on here to criticize and rank us, some of them need to shut their mouths and figure out how to save their chapter because they are about to lose their house. But yeah, another sorority would be great or at the very least, one of our nice, respectful frats gets a better house.

Can Mizzou support 15 sororities? Yes, it could. But everyone would need to be open and supportive of all the chapters instead of bashing and making groups 'the low group'/bottom tier.

Here's the truth: Any group could be successful, even the small national groups but the girls have to give them a chance. I don't want to name groups because some idiot/troll will come on here and say "That group sucks nationally and would never be successful on a big campus". Yes, they would need a house to be successful here, but if they did and again girls gave them a chance, any group can be successful. Illinois has 19 sororities. Indiana has 22. If they can, so could we.
