Can Mizzou still sustain 15 sororities?
by: stripesIs there just not enough girls going greek to support membership for 15 chapters? I’m curious if tri sigma’s decline had to do with too much competition, or if it was more their own doing? I can’t anticipate them not losing their charter after this year. If PHA made created an interest group to have another sorority come to campus would they also struggle? Maybe chapters with stronger national support like Alpha Gamma Delta, Delta Zeta, Alpha Omicron Pi could be comparably more successful than tri sigma at Mizzou. I’m sure PHA has had to have questioned if they’ll be good with 14 chapters or if it will make the community look better if tri sigma can be replaced. No one else has needs or plans for renovations or a new house for the 24-25 school year, and it would be a shame if a frat ended up buying that house once no one else has any use for renting it. If a lot of the quality girls who fell through the cracks during recruitment and a couple of willing upperclassmen became founding members maybe it could turn into a chapter that could at the very least make quota and not have serious retention issues.

Mizzou has had such a strong sorority system for such a long time that it is very difficult for a new chapter to establish itself. So they are always on the outside looking in. Their actual houses (structures) often aren't up to the standards of the more established houses and their alum network is non-existent. Plus some of the nationals just aren't that strong. I think Mizzou can support 15 houses, but they have to be good houses. Plus, nationals like SK, PhiMu and Tri Sig just aren't that good. You can find those chapters on small campuses all around the country and there is no prestige involved in being a member. Sad but true. There is a reason SK failed a couple of times before its current incarnation here and that AGD tried and failed many years ago. DZ and AOPi nationals aren't any better. The best houses are the ones that have been here forever. There's a reason they remain strong. New houses struggle and often don't make it, and that's OK. Survival of the fittest.

mizzou had aopii in the 80's they failed for the same reasons tri sig did. its hard to have a strong standing when you're established in 2009. tri sig also didn't have payment plans for members and a lot dropped due to strict finicals. their sisterhood isn't strong because they took the pnms that were the leftovers during recrutiment, and they never had a strong holding at Mizzou because people dont want to associate with tri sigs. harsh but its the truth.

Many sororities on this campus have been here for more than 100 years. That's part of what makes the Mizzou Greek System so outstanding. Newer houses, though, don't have a very good track record. Many limp along until they just fade away. There is an exception, though, and that's KD. Compared to the old, established houses, KD is a relative newcomer that has done an excellent job of establishing and keeping its identity. It keeps its standards high and never settles for just taking the leftovers. There's a reason it's a strong, respected house on this campus. Some of the older houses could learn something about setting a high standard. You know who you are.

If you weren’t in the house you’re in now, what other house would you want to be in and why? Honest answers only, please no self promotion!
If I wasn’t in my current house, I’d want to be in Tri Delt. I love that they work with St. Jude and they all seem to be really invested in their work with them. I also think they have a really underrated sisterhood as I see many lifelong friendships forming there. Many of them also seem very ambitious and overall positive women.

To answer the question, yes we can sustain 15 sororities but will we, probably not. The remaining houses will all continue to be strong solid chapters and with only 14, the remaining houses can be even more selective. It benefits them while our PHA system will become even stronger. I think people forget that even tri sig had more members, at the end, than half the frats on campus. 14 sororities have at least a thousand members more than the almost 30 frats we have. The question should be why do we continue to tolerate a subpar IFC, with subpar frats on campus? And why do we judge, rank and put pressure on 14 extreme strong, competitive and intelligent sororities while completely ignoring the dumpster fire frats we have.

Can Mizzou support 15 sororities? Yes, it could. But everyone would need to be open and supportive of all the chapters instead of bashing and making groups 'the low group'/bottom tier.
Here's the truth: Any group could be successful, even the small national groups but the girls have to give them a chance. I don't want to name groups because some idiot/troll will come on here and say "That group sucks nationally and would never be successful on a big campus". Yes, they would need a house to be successful here, but if they did and again girls gave them a chance, any group can be successful. Illinois has 19 sororities. Indiana has 22. If they can, so could we.

Does Phi Mu really not have a strong Nationals? I’ve heard they are a top house in the south.
