What they don't tell you about COBing

by: The truth

Lots of misinformation here about COBing. If a house cuts you during recruitment, it is highly unlikely they will take you during COB. There are reasons not to rely on COBing. 1. The best houses either don't do it or take just a small handful of women. 2. There are houses that do it all the time and you wouldn't want to be a member of those houses for several reasons: they have retention issues and can't keep the women they take or they are not on firm financial footing and have to fill every single vacancy because otherwise the numbers don't work. 3. Many women who are chosen via COB are nothing more than friends of current members and who wants to join a house like that where it's who you know, not what you have to offer. My advice, stay far away from the houses who rely on COBing to fill their house because they aren't very strong houses.

^ Thanks for this. It is what I have heard all along from my friends who went through this last year.

If you only pref one sorority and don’t get a bid, then yeah I would COB that house. Maybe if you made it to sisterhood round with them. But baby, if you got cut the first round do not waste your time and guard your heart. If you wanna drop rush really evaluate the situation at hand. Are there any sororities you have remaining that you like or are open to? If yes stick it out and try your luck. My roommate last year had a rough recruitment, like she only had 4/15 ask her to return after the first round, but her favorite kept her, and she had one other she thought was nice. Come sisterhood she legit only had 1 house left, but it was her fave. It really threw her off because she didn’t get why it played out that way. She was so happy to get to pref round. And at that point she knew she’d get a bid because her pi chi told her you would if she selected her max at pref, which was 1. The night before bid day I joking had her practice the hand sign for pics, and the next day she ran home to what she wanted the most. To this day she’ll say yes I got my top sorority, but rush was a really tough week. Many of the active girlies you see rushing you really grinded throughout the week. We gotta stop romanticizing a perfect rush experience because that’s just not a reality for most girls despite things working in the end. That’s why I tell girls who I know are going through recruitment this year to at least talk with someone knowledgeable about the process like a pi chi or active from another school to vent and talk through their emotions if they have thoughts of dropping so they can make a rational decision, and not an emotional impulsive one.

Not true! You can get in a house you got cut from. It depends on pledge class room and helps to have a friend or know someone who can vouch for you.

I was dropped from a house and ended up getting a bid from them. It does happen. I also know some who dropped houses and then ended up joining the same house later.

Which houses don’t usually COB?

Pretty much all houses have COB’ed at some point, maybe some more than others. According to the spring 2023 scorecard, PiPhi, KKG and GPhi were the only 3 that did not COB last school year. This is all public information that you can Google. Our top houses are generally less likely to COB, but they still do.

Do you know why GPhi didn't COB? They only have 201 Only Phi Mu and SK have less members then them. The only one they are close to is AXO with 231 but that's 30 members less. Honest question since you said to look at the report card. They have one of the lowest memberships. It doesn't make sense. They can't be a top house with such little membership.

Kappa was for in trouble for not have NM from the fall registered their grades so I think that is why they didn't do it and Phi Phi did not do it because their house was almost full. I don't know if that's a rule or just something that is commone.

I think KKG just got fined for that. Limiting COB abilities wouldn’t really make sense as a consequence for that since it just takes away from PHA $. Pi Phi and KKG were pretty full last year (260 and 257 I think) so I assume that’s just why they didn’t COB, but both have done so in the past so who knows what they’ll do this year.

No idea why Gphi didn’t. It’s possible they just didn’t know of enough girls they wanted to offer bids to so they just opted out of it. Just because you have a low member count doesn’t mean you have to COB. I think it kind of goes without saying that girls receiving informal bids usually know someone in the house or have befriended the members and that’s how they’re getting these bids, it doesn’t just happen by default, at least not in the good houses.

Thanks. I know they don't have to but I was just really surprised their membership was so low. I didn't even know the scorecard existed. It's definitely interesting.

The rest makes sense. I just know Kappa had that issue. Phi Pi had the highest membership so it made sense they didn't.

You are right about COB, usually it's people they know.

Thanks for the quick answer. I appreciate it.
