PNMs (and actives): None of this matters I promise

by: Old person

As someone who rushed at Mizzou 10 years ago and was in one of these sororities, I can assure you with 100% certainty that NONE of this will matter in 10 years. It won’t even matter in 4. It doesn’t matter if it’s a “good” house or a “bad” house, it’s literally not gonna matter after you graduate and nobody’s gonna give a F. Go to the house you vibe with the most, if you don’t vibe with any, then drop. Have fun and don’t let girls barely older than you boss you around. I promise you, IT WILL NOT MATTER. Stand up for yourself always.

That’s all, love you bye

The OP must be from a really irrelevant house. Do you know how I know? Because she says which house you are in doesn't matter even though it absolutely does. I am in a top house now. My sister was in a top house and graduated several years ago. Many of her business contacts were made through her sorority. She's a CPA who went into public accounting and when it was time to find a new job, as most accountants do after gaining public accounting experience, all she had to do was pick up the phone, talk with some sorority alums, arrange interviews and choose her next job. It was that easy. She also has lifelong friends from her house. Can't say enough good things about being in a good house.

Can’t you do this in literally any house? They all have alumni that can pull strings… what does being in a top house have to do with it? Feels like you’re projecting lol

How many members of houses without grade cuts become CPAs at age 22? I entered Mizzou with enough credits to be a sophomore, as did many of the women in my pledge class. You don't find that too often in a bottom tier house. So, no, you can't do that in "literally any house.' If you had an actual functioning brain you would know there are benefits to being in a house full of smart women.

Pay attention PNM’s. THIS is a perfect advertisement for the type of person you might be associating with in a top house. A self absorbed, elitist, snob.
ALL houses have smart women. ALL houses provide connections into your professional career. All houses will provide lifelong friendships.
However, this attitude that because you are in a top sorority you are better is ridiculous. Clearly this person peaked mentally in high school.
Really think do I want a superficial sisterhood based on what can you do for ME, Or do you want a genuine sisterhood?

I'm sorry, but all this woman is saying is that there is an advantage to being in a house that makes grades/academics a priority. For example, she finished a 5-year program in 4 years, saved 10s of thousands of dollars, and had the support from her sisters to do that. Now, if to you that means she is self-absorbed, an elitist, superficial and "peaked mentally in high school," well, that says more about Really Wow than it does about the OP. There is nothing wrong with aiming high, no matter what those who "settle" say. They are just ripping overachievers because they aren't one. Beware of this attitude this week and throughout your entire college career. Some things DO matter. Pay attention.

I’m in a top house and I’ll just be honest with you, the smartest people I know are not in sororities at all because they just can’t be bothered with it or they can’t afford it. Just saying, there’s a reason why Greek life isn’t a very big thing at more prestigious colleges. I love my sorority and it’s super fun to be in one, but I also have some self awareness and I understand the reality of what I’m invested in here. I recommend you also do a quick reality check yourself so you don’t screw up your future with that attitude.

If there aren't any smart women in sororities, how do you explain that the all-sorority GPA is significantly above the Mizzou all-women GPA? I've got all day, tell me how that can be. Oh, and while you are bashing women, tell me why so many fraternities have a GPA significantly below the all-male Mizzou GPA.

This is clearly the same person coming back here every hour to defend her bizarre stance that only girls in sororities, specifically “top tier” sororities, are the smartest and only well-connected women on campus. Now she’s saying anyone that disagrees is anti-woman. The irony of it all. Go touch some grass girl

Oh my god I’m reading through this thread and whoever is commenting these atrocious elitist things about some sororities not having any valuable alumni is so delusional. If you are so smart and know so many fantastic people that can help you then no offense but WHY ARE YOU AT MIZZOU?!?

A free education? Everyone knows where you get your last degree is most important, not your first degree. And it's really easy for smart people to get a full ride at this school.

Also no hate of course to my fellow mizzou Panhellenic women, but I think we can all agree that mizzou isn’t Harvard ok so the whole elite grades/connections/alumni BS…. Let’s not buy anything this chick ranting in this thread is selling. It’s all just for fun, your experience will be what you make of it no matter the house

Nice try Kappa. The largest top 5, sororities counting towards GPA per the Mizzou Fall 22 end of semester score card was:

Phi Phi 277
Chi O 273
AdeePi 269
KD 267
Zeta 265

KKG 211 hmmm....

KKG with 211 because they were penalized.

Spring Report Card:
Pi Phi 260
KKG 257
Chi O and Zeta 253
KD 250

So how did KKG go from 211 to 257 with no COB? \n\n\n\n\n

It’s bc their new member class that came through formal rush forgot to register that they were a member through Mizzou. Every girl in a sorority has to do this thing through Mizzou that signs away there grades and allows the chapter to see there grades, but kappas new members didn’t do it, so they weren’t calculated into the total member count. Hence the huge jump of members, no sorority could rush 46 girls for just cob. Also on the spring report card you can see that PiPhi and kappa were the only sorority with a new member count of 0, so they didn’t accept spring cobs

I am also an alumna of a sorority at Mizzou, one you would consider "lower tier". Guess what? I moved to a city where the only chapter of my house are top tier, I have made WONDERFUL connections (I live in D.C.) and I have connected with Panhellenic women everywhere. It. Does. Not. Matter. I got involved with panhellenic as an alum and the support and connections with women of other houses that I have made outweigh whatever stupid tier system you adhere to.

Hey rushees- if in doubt drop and COB later-spring rush is better for freshmen as you have time to see the right house for you.

There are houses that COB all the time because they have retention issues. I would never join one of those. And if a good house dropped you once, they won't take you in spring.

Since tri sig isn’t recruiting and there are more girls this year, more sororities especially the top ones won’t do spring cob. I know PiPhi and kappa didn’t last year, so I doubt they will this year. So pnm’s don’t drop just to rush at spring bc it could be totally different this year.

Kappa was not in trouble. The did it based of who was the largest chapter. Kappa was the largest chapter so they couldn’t cob and PiPhi was the 2nd or 3rd largest (i don’t remember) so they couldn’t cob either (or didn’t want to do all the work for 1-3 new members). Both sororities are in great standing with the university and if kappa was actually in trouble with pha, everyone would have known, stop spreading lies.

Only do this if you’d rather not be in a sorority at all than be in the houses you have left. Spring rush isn’t something to count on the pledge classes are small and a lot of girls will want those spots.

The people who say it doesn't matter which sorority you are in are usually in a less than average sorority. If they were in a top house they would know just how much it really does matter going forward. Sux to be them.

by: Not true lolAug 17, 2023 11:21:16 AM

If you seriously believe that after you graduate anyone in the real world cares about what sorority you were in then I think you might be in for a serious wake-up call. My very successful mentor even recommends to not list my sorority on my resume when applying for my first job in a few months with certain companies because of the impression it might give off. Like no FAANG company cares about your sorority…. Maybe a recruiting job might care lol.

And sure you might be able to contact some alumni you knew at companies you’re interested in to see if there are any opportunities available but that’s never a guarantee. It’s all luck and has nothing to do with the house you were in.

Who would ever think you should list your sorority on a resume? That said, if you have a strong alum network, you might not even need a resume.
