Grade point and activities

by:

I’m really looking forward to recruitment. My mom and grandmother were both in sororities at Mizzou that are considered very good but I’m going through with a super open mind. I have a high grade point average and was involved in many activities and clubs at school. My worry is that I’ll get dropped by houses on the assumption that I’ll want to join my legacy house. I don’t want that to happen if I’m in love with another house.

In the past couple of years, sororities have been decreasing the importance they place on legacies. In my chapter, we used to have to keep legacies until a certain round of recruitment and have permission to drop them, this is no longer the case. This also means you are not guaranteed a bid to your legacy house, which is a good thing! It might not actually be the best fit.

Unless you go into a chapter and start talking about how you’re a legacy to XYZ I don’t think this will be an issue.

Although legacy doesn't mean what it used to, a chapter legacy is actually a bit special for that house, and they could be more interested in you for that at first. DO make sure your legacy house(s) know you are rushing through any official legacy intro forms or recs or other official ways. DON'T put your legacy houses on any forms or registrations that other sororities will see. Ask any rec writers for the non-legacy sororities to leave mention of it out, and don't bring it up during recruitment, and if it does happen to come up be sure to tell them you are keeping a super open mind.

Legacies don't mean much any more. If a house wants you, they want you regardless of whether you are a legacy or not. Don't give it another thought.

A house that has been on campus for awhile could fill its entire pledge class with legacies, and no one wants that. There are so many legacies that it really doesn't matter. In fact, sometimes being a legacy works against you.

Would it be better if I didn’t say I was a legacy at all?

It's up to you. It likely will not hurt OR help. Just make sure your mom doesn't go on a rant the way so many alums do if her daughter doesn't get into her house.
