Top vs Bottom Houses

Each sorority has its own unique strengths, values, and sisterhood that appeal to different individuals. It's important to approach the recruitment process with an open mind and get to know the members of each sorority on a personal level. This will allow you to make an informed decision based on your own values and interests, rather than societal perceptions.

Furthermore, it's important to remember that rankings and reputations can vary from school to school, and even from year to year. What may be considered a top or bottom house at one school may not be the same at another. Ultimately, the most important factor in choosing a sorority should be your personal connection with the members and your alignment with the organization's values and goals.

Don't have a negative stereotype towards the "bottom houses" because that could be the house you end up feeling that you fit in the most, or one of the only houses you receive a bid from. Top houses are known as top houses because of how long they have been on campus, so they have a better and more established reputation. However, it doesn't mean that the individual people are better than those in bottom tier sororities, as there are many girls in top houses who are rude and full of themselves.

I beg of you to go into recruitment with an open mind because if you don't, you may end up hating the process.\n\n\n\n\n

I’m curious too. I know a really beautiful girl in one of the so-called “bottom” houses from my high school and I know a girl who wasn’t cool at all from my school who is in a “top” house. What’s most important to get in a top or mid house? I’m smart with tons of activities and people tell me I’m funny and cute but I’m definitely not a skinny girl.

The top houses get their choice of new members. They are looking for women who have something special to offer. It starts with brains, but there is so much more. Each and every one of its members stands out in a special way: a pianist, a gymnast, a National Merit Finalist, an editor of the school paper, someone who was educated overseas and speaks three languages, etc. Looks may be a component, too, but never the main factor. The women in the top houses are well-rounded and will bring something special to the house. The mid-tier houses have some of these women, too, but generally not as outstanding. The bottom tier houses take who they can get. Beware of any house that's one-dimensional. If you notice all of the women are fake blonds or all of the women are from West County or there aren't many out-of-state girls, that just means they choose people for superficial reasons or who are friends of existing members. They tend to be clique-y and average at best. If there is one overreaching factor in the top houses, it is confidence. I am not judging the quality of the sisterhood of any of these houses. But it never hurts to surround yourself with outstanding women because they tend to encourage you to be and do your best.

It's hard to get out of the bottom tier. Mid and top move around a bit - but the lowest ranked houses have been the lowest ranked for at least a decade (google mizzou greek rank 2013). PNMs talk and this reputation gets around during recruitment, so girls cut the bottom tier houses and some girls that end up receiving bids may not be thrilled.. so the cycle continues.
