Looking back, offering advice

by:

As the school year winds down, can we all take a minute to help with some ideas about recruitment? It's not that long ago that we were sweltering in the August heat, hoping to get into the house of our dreams. The top houses -- ChiO, PiPhi, ADPi, etc. -- have their choice of who they take. We all were interested in those houses, but it didn't work out for most of us. So, in time for recruitment planning, what about the top houses attracted you and is there any way other houses can make themselves more appealing?

I was attracted by their confidence. They didn't try too hard and they just naturally seemed to be themselves. I also appreciated their diversity, not just race, but looks and interest. The lower tier houses just seemed so desperate

They get who they want, which makes them top houses because they have such a large pool from which to choose. And they know how to spell.

I didn't meet many that were interested in any of the houses you mentioned and if they were, not one got past philanthropy.

What I learned is PNMs knew about where they were going and girls with no connections were left to figure it out. The only differece between a fictional top house and the rest is, the rest welcome everyone while other houses don't. It's why fictional top houses have high drop rates after rush while some of the others don't. Top houses already met, knew and picked their members before the rush process even started. It doesn't make them better for meeting quota, they already had their list.

PHA tells us to trust the process and that is a lie. Unless you have already secured a spot, you are left with 5 maybe 6 houses that actually make rush fair.

If you are one of those who is going into rush without a connection, out of the choices that welcome anyone going through rush, the best house you will get into is KD especially if you don't have recommendations. They are one of the only "upper mid tier" house that doesn't require knowing someone.

Best advice, know your options. Without connections, your choices are slim during formal rush. If you are not asked back to KD during sisterhood, you will have one or all of the following SK, Phi Mu or Tri Sig as your choices. If you get lucky maybe Tri Delt, Kappa or DG with KD only if you went to school with someone in the house and they liked you. The is always that handful of random success stories but they are rare.

As of the end of fall, there are the top 5 houses in order of member size: Pi Beta Phi, Alpha Pi, Chi Omega, Alpha Delta Pi and Kappa Delta

Top 5 in order of GPA: Pi Beta Phi, Kappa Alpha Theta, Alpha Delta Pi, Chi Omega and Kappa Delta

Out of all the top houses above only KD takes PNM without recommendations. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

No way you received a 34 on your ACT and choose Mizzou as an out of state student 🤣

Why would a top student not want to attend the nation's first, and best, journalism school? I'm sure there are many people in the JSchool who are smarter than me.

while I completely agree that it is much harder to get into a “top” house without connections, i can say that it isn’t completely impossible! i rushed with absolutely no connections or recommendation letters and ended up being fortunate enough to choose between pi phi and theta in the end, and i got my first choice.

yes, it’s difficult to get there (and i did have a pretty great resume which helped a ton), but if you’re a pnm don’t assume the worst! be confident and don’t go into the process thinking that a house is unattainable OR that you will absolutely have a bid at a certain house. you never know!

those houses like pi phi, adpi, and chi o are extremely selective for a variety of reasons. you can definitely make it to all of those houses without rec letters or knowing anyone if you are smart and well rounded with a good social media presence. after you make it through the first round the houses are looking for girls who are genuine, passionate about something, easy to talk to, and willing to get involved! t

I agree with you! I managed to get into two of those top houses all the way through pref without any recommendation letters or connections. Most top houses care more about your social media presence than any recommendation letter.

How many do those top house take during formal recruitment? Maybe 2-4 per house with no recs or connections. So out of 1200 women, maybe, at most 8-16 out of 1200 got into the top 4 houses. Let's be honest with PNMs. There is nothing wrong with being selective but let's stop selling the PHA "trust the process" lie and be honest so PNMs aren't disappointed. Now COB, that's a different story and I will agree with you for COB, they all look at the PNMs to get their numbers up. If any PNM was smart they would skip formal and go COB.

You are literally just flat-out wrong. The biggest cuts that houses make are based on GPAs, and if you don’t have a 3.5, most top houses will drop you. After that, if you have good conversations, you will be asked to go to the next round. I had zero recommendations or connections for two top houses but still got asked to pref. I know many girls who were also in the same boat. If you have a 3.75, most top houses will ask you to come to the first round. I know a lot of people don't get a 3.75 in high school, so they won't get into top houses. It’s just the truth. Also most top houses don’t do spring rush, such as piphi and kappa this year. Not saying they are the BEST HOUSES just saying they got all the members they needed from fall rush which means they must be pretty competitive.

I’m in one of those “top houses” and what made them my top choice was this - when I spoke to the women there I not only felt welcome and like I could be their friend, but also I thought they were someone I wanted to be like. I spoke to a senior during philanthropy who was super nice and shared about how how she’d grown through her experience in the chapter. She asked me questions that weren’t superficial and seemed to genuinely want to get to know me. I walked away from that conversation thinking “wow, i hope i can be like her in 4 years”. Impressive- but still kind and not intimidating.
