Helicopter Mom Probs

by:

I love my mom but she is so fixated on appearances. She told me if I don’t get in Pi Phi, Theta, Chi Omega, Kappa or Tri Delta I must drop out of rush. All I want to do is find a place I fit in. What advice do you have?

You really need to ignore your Mom. Follow your own instincts. Sororities or Fraternities that might have been viewed as top when she was around, might not be the same. Additionally you aren’t your Mom, you are you. Find your own group….

Part of being in a sorority is finding where you feel at home. That may look different than what your mom wants. Being in a so called "top" house doesn't mean anything if it isn't the right fit for you. It truly is more important to find where you belong, not where your mom thinks you should go. Are you paying for the sorority you join or is your mom? If she is paying, that doesn't give her a right to pick, but it doesn't sound like she would be willing to pay if you end up in a different house. Maybe during rush have a heart to heart with her and tell her where you feel you fit best and explain that to her. Also top houses cut a lot of girls. It may not be up to you to go to one of those houses. Hopefully your mom will be able to understand and accept where you want to go or end up and have a change of heart. Good luck

It is not better to drop than to join the house where you are wanted and have a great freshman year being Greek. You will miss out on so much and can never get back your experience of the first semester in college in a sorority. Your mom is not being fair by trying to exclude you. Nobody cares what your letters are; you will have the same experience wherever and nobody will look up to you for having certain letters, or down on you for others. That's just not how it is.

If she's paying the bills, I guess you do what she says. If you're paying the bills, ignore her. But the fact that ADPi, one of the oldest and most respected houses with extremely high standards, isn't on her list shows how out of touch she is. If I were you I would let her know how difficult it is to get in to those houses, what their gpa is, and whether you think you can qualify. If not, decide in advance whether you should go through recruitment at all. By the way, if you drop because you get cut by top houses, you won't be alone. There is a huge dropout rate.
