I've read that certain houses are known for recruiting wealthy girls. I'm just curious if this is true, and if so which houses those are. I don't want to be associated with a house that is known for wanting girls based on how much their parents make

I also was wondering which house people were talking about that's culty/religious?

As for religious/culty stuff, almost all houses have things that might be considered a bit weird. You have to remember though that these chapters were founded decades ago, some more than one hundred and fifty years. It was a different time and different things were done. What makes greek life so cool is that you do the same ritual they did when the chapter was founded. So yeah, it seems a bit ominous and old fashioned at first, but nothing is dangerous, you know?

Nobody is going to do blood sacrifices. There's no swearing your life to the chapter. No blood oaths or anything. It's really nothing to worry about.

Kappa and Pi Phi are known for recruiting wealthy girls. They look for things like where you went to high school, private school is an indicator. They might ask where you went for vacation or what you did over the summer. They pay attention to if you played sports or did activates that require time and money like rowing, horse back riding, etc. They'll look at your purse, see if you have a watch that's really nice, stuff like that.

This is normal rush stuff.

Now DG is known for flat out asking you what your parents do and how much they make. DG is not a top tier house and they are just interested in getting girls with money. Houses like Kappa and Pi Phi tend to attract wealthy girls but they always take quality women, who are well rounded and such.

I'm sure other houses try to recruit wealthy girls but Pi Phi and Kappa are who I've heard do it the most.

And speaking of real purses, DO NOT bring a fake designer bag in. It's better to just not have a designer bag than bring a fake in. Every house has a girl who can spot a fake a mile away and it just looks like you're trying to hard. It's tacky.

Also, don't lie about having vacation homes/doing prestigious sports. Just be yourself.

PiPhi has more than its share of wealthy girls, but they took me, too. And I'm the daughter of a single parent and I had to work every semester of school. Never once did they ask during rush about what my parent(s) did and if we talked about vacations, it was because I brought it up. We have our pick of girls, but I have never, ever heard anyone during rush talk about a PNM's finances. That's just tacky. There are houses who ask, however, and I stayed as far away as possible from them. My advice is to look around during rush to see if a house appreciated diversity. And pay close attention to who is on the sidewalk with you toward the end of rush. If you are surrounded by girls who identify themselves through their shoes and purses, be forewarned, because the quality of sisterhood likely will be just as superficial.

The girl above me is right. While houses like Pi Phi and Kappa tend to take wealthy girls, it doesn't mean your chances of getting into those houses are worse because you're not wealthy. The top tier in general takes a wide variety of girls and like to be well rounded, regardless of wealth.

Speaking of purses, I didn't even carry one! I made sure my outfits had pockets. I think designer purses are just such a waste of money anyway and I sure didn't want some superficial DG or GPhi judging me on what I carried instead of who I am.

I worked all summer and as a graduation present to myself i bought myself a tory burch purse with my own money. I am not from a wealthy family at all. I was APPALLED when I was at pi phi, and the girl rushing me cynically said "wow that's a beautiful purse! showing it off, aren't ya?"

It was downright rude and I could not wait to get out of that house. I wasn't showing it off, it's the only purse i own. Glad I got out of that house as fast as i could. Shame on you, pi phi.

I don't believe this for a minute. First of all, why in the world would someone spend all of their summer earnings on a purse right before college? And second, who in the world owns only one purse? I cry foul. Who wrote this? A Kappa? A DG? A Gamma Phi?

I actually own one purse. I'm not much of a purse person. I have one purse I've always carried.

I own two purses, one for everyday ( Graduation gift & I hardly use it) and one for "dress-up" (was my moms). I use a backpack for everything else, so, NO, not everyone has more than one purse. However, I worked all summer and I bought a pair of Channel sunglasses with some of my earnings. They cost $360.00. I thought they were AWESOME -- and they are. But I wish I knew then what I know now-- who cares? Sunglasses are for protecting your eyes, not entrance into a sorority. I don't need a gazillion purses and thousands of designer sunglasses to be accepted by my sisters. At DG and Chi O, they both complimented my sunglasses, and mentioned my purse (coach). I couldn't get out of there fast enough.

Stay clear from DG. Like so many others have already reported, they asked what my parents did for a living. Apparently I didn't seem rich enough in my response. Just be yourself. :)
