do req letters even help you get into a sorority?

They can help, but they won't guarantee you anything. Recs here are not a big thing. Especially if they're not genuine recs, just rando women that were in a sorority that said they'd help you out. It's really who you are on your resume and then in person. I know girls in every house who got in without recs.

Don't rely on recs to help you get into a house. When I rushed I had recs for pi phi and theta and was cut first round (although the theta girl and I really got along). It's okay, though. The system works itself out.

I got into the house that I got a rec letter for, don't know if that helped or not… But it probably didn't hurt.
