Top Houses Question

by: Lorelei

I pledged a so-called mediocre house last year and absolutely love it. I have several friends going through recruitment this year who wondered why houses like Chi Omega, Theta and Pi Phi are always considered top. I wasn’t asked back to any of those houses after Philanthropy day so I don’t really know how to answer why those houses are the most sought after. I can’t imagine being any happier in one of those houses than my most loved but not on everyone’s radar house!

I would love to know the answer to this. What makes these houses so sought after? Are they truly that great or is it the reputation or that it is hard to get into that makes them appear the best? I truly believe any house can be the perfect house for someone, no matter how the masses seem to view them but I still wonder. What are the characteristics that make them great? Their sisterhood, their involvement, their grades, their appearance, or is it just how their resumes look? I also would like to know what makes the "bottom" houses, bottom houses? Is the sisterhood bad, grades, bad, reputation, appearance, etc? Would love to know what the difference really is in being a "top" house, a mid house, or a "bottom" house?

A strong sisterhood works both ways. In a top house, you are chosen because you have a lot to offer and can help a sorority keep their standards high. Conversely, that sorority can help you by giving you strong support throughout college and beyond and exposing you to friends with whom you share the same high standards. But because there are so many great houses on this campus, you can find your niche just about anywhere. So if you are happy in your current house and have found true friendship there with women who share the same interests, that's fantastic. Why do you even care what's going on at the PiPhi, Theta or ChiO house? Seems irrelevant to me.

What happens when you wind up in the wrong house and realize too late that they don’t care about grades or being involved? You don’t really have much say in the house that you get. Other houses that you would have been great in and that would have helped you become a stronger leader let girls slide through the cracks. Seems like a bad system where if xyz people were jealous of you in high school/hated you, then you get dropped from houses

This probably happens a lot, but only to women who are desperate to be part of Greek life and who ignore all the signs of a bad fit when they are going through recruitment. Each and every person going through should check the Greek Life website for gpa's and violations. It's easy to spot the part houses and those without high standards. If you are asked back only to houses that wouldn't be a good fit, it's time to drop out of recruitment. Take a year to work on your grades and activities and make new friends who are in sororities. One of those friends might be able to help you get into a better house during COB. But sorority life might just not be for you. No need to compromise your standards. Just cultivate good friends with whom you have more in common and, hopefully, you will be able to live with them in future years.

Those houses did not think you were the right fit, so you were not invited back.

The reason the houses you named (and I’d throw ADPi or Kappa in there as well) are so sought after and respected is they care more about girls who are well-rounded, intelligent and involved than how popular they were in high school or how pretty they are. They want girls who will make a difference and bring something to the house to enrich
