References? Legacy?
by: TigerWhich houses use references and which don't? Where are they most needed? Does legacy status make a difference? Are girls who are children of Greek parents have any benefit to someone who isn't? Does it look good to have that family background even if it is for a different chapter or does it not matter?

My house has to have a recommendation but if we love you and you don’t have one we’ll make sure we get one for you. As for legacy status - you could fill up a pledge class with legacies but the policy for my house is if your mom or sister is from our chapter we have to ask you back once. If we like you and ask you back after that you go to the top of our bid list. We cannot cut you after that.

Do you mean recommendations? All of the good houses require them, but there is a way to get one if you are an outstanding candidate. If you plan to go through recruitment, you should get recs for as many houses as possible. It's in your best interest because they tell much more than the official recruitment form asks. Why would you not?

As previously mentioned, the most established houses could fill an entire pledge class with just legacies, but they never would. We try to not have more than 10, so you actually have to be even more qualified than run-of-the-mill PNMs to get a bid from a legacy house. What we like to do for fun is steal top legacies from other houses!

If you aren't interested in a house that is so outstanding that it can recruit top legacies from other great houses, then we don't want you either -- not that you'd qualify. I'm not sure you understand just how competitive recruitment is. There's a reason hundreds of women drop out. If a sorority can get the absolute cream of the crop, even if the women they choose are legacies elsewhere, well, that says a lot.

Every house finds it very satisfying to steal a legacy. My house has actually managed to steal three pnm's who had sitting sisters at different houses here! That was pretty sweet!

It does not matter in the least if a pnm comes from a family of 'Greek' members; no one cares. Check your legacy status on the pertinent national website and see if you actually are a legacy and what that means for you, if anything, in recruitment. A rec can only help you so try to get one for every house even though at many they are no longer required for a bid but still they help, except Phi Mu no longer accepts them at all. Many houses allow a rec from a non-alum who knows the pnm very well - AXO, ADP, DG, GPB, KAT, KD, PBP, SSS.

Stealing top legacies from other houses sounds like HS, not what I’m looking for in college.
