future tiger wondering about rush
by: HS seniorOK, so I know I might be getting ahead of myself, but I think I want to rush. The only thing that scares me about the process is the fact that it happens so quickly. Not only am I not able to see the sororities for myself, but I'd be picking a sisterhood before I start classes. Did any of you all have this fear, and how did that work out for you? Also, how bad would it be if I rushed as a rising sophomore?

HS Senior- Prepare by getting rec letters to every house if you can. Ask everyone you know, teachers, friends moms to write one for you. Prepare a resume to send out so they can know more about you. This will help each house learn about you and what you can offer before rush.
You will need an excellent GPA. Most houses have a cutoff point, but if you have under a 3.0 you may want to wait until you can raise it to at least that before rushing.
The poster above is correct. Putting your best foot forward on your social media is VERY IMPORTANT. You do NOt want to appear to be a party girl. Clean that up and be aware of what you post. They can and will look.
Work on your wardrobe for rush. Look your best (hair and makeup) SMILE and be friendly. Rush is hectic and stressful. Relax and DO NOT LISTEN TO RUMORS ABOUT HOUSES!!! Many girls find themselves wishing the had given a house a chance later on. The fact is, they choose you, you do not get to choose them. Keep an open mind about each house and what you can offer them. Are you an athlete? Dancer? Singer? Leader? Let them know!
Preparation will help you to be more relaxed during the process.
Remember that all the houses have something amazing to offer. A sisterhood. Good luck and remember that this site doesn't accurately represent greek life at MIZ. Check out www.greekchat to get more great advice! Good Luck!!

You will have a much better chance of getting into a good house if you rush as a freshman. Some houses take just one or two sophomores vs. 70+ freshmen. Plus, if you haven't gotten good grades in high school it's unlikely you will get stellar grades as a freshman in college. In short, if you have good grades in high school, activities, honors, recs, better than average looks and the ability to hold a conversation, you should do fine during rush. Some people think rush is hectic and stressful. I guess it is, but I also thought it was fun. It's a whirlwind, but it's also the opportunity to meet wonderful people, to see where you want to live and with whom, and to learn to trust your feelings and instincts, which is a HUGE part of growing up. I'd say go for it. And keep an open minds because there really aren't any bad sisterhoods in our greek system.

If you are an outstanding candidate and a house REALLY wants you, they will find someone to do an instant rec for you. It's not a deal breaker. But the thing about recs is that they can provide positive information that houses otherwise might not have access to. And that's the kind of thing that can set you apart from the crowd.

OK, I'm actually starting to reconsider now that I'm reading all this stuff about Recs...How long do you actually get to know these girls? How much of a show is rush? Would I be better off getting to know girls my first semester and going through COB for the house I want after really getting to know the girls?

HS Senior,
You should join Greek Chat! You will find many alumni there who can help you with rec letters and great advice about rush. You can ask teachers and other moms to write them for you. They are not required to join, or as the poster above said, they will get one for you if they want you. Most importantly is to make the effort to look your best, be yourself and KEEP AN OPEN MIND to the process.

I repeat, DO NOT count on finding a house by COB-ing. Take a chance at rush. That way you get to see every house and every sorority gets to see you. With COB-ing there is very little opportunity to get into a mid- or top-tier house. It's an odd system and one that doesn't work very well.

Recs aren't a deal breaker by the way, I managed to get into a upper middle tier house based on my personality, looks and grades with no Recs for that house. It just helps. And a Rec can be a friend who is a current member, an alumni you know, etc.
