Lower recruitment numbers and quotas

by:

I know that Mizzou's enrollment decreased in 2016 and 2017, but hasn't freshman enrollment actually been trending up over the past several years, even with the pandemic? Is there just less interest in Greek life these days?

Not trying to stir things up—just curious as someone from another school who remembers MU pledge classes being in the 90s and 100s before 2015-16.

Check the demographics. College age students today are a very small generation.

It is interesting, especially since Arkansas had their biggest bid day ever this year. Sororities have gotten some bad press recently, that could be part of it.

You're blaming "bad press"? How about blaming the stupid things that Greeks do to warrant legitimate news stories? Reporters don't make sht up, you know.

GDI's do stupid sht all the time but they don't make the news blow up like Greeks do. However, Greek chapters do a whole lot more good locally and nationally as organizations and the individuals in them, but that gets little to no press.

If GDIs are members of a selective organization and their actions result in harming or even killing its member, you can be dam sure it would be reported. And lots of GDIs do good things. So, yea, you're an idiot.

Lol what I’m not saying reporters are making anything up, people in Greek life do stupid things and deserve to be called out for it. You’re so hostile for no reason.

Bad press doesn’t mean it’s a lie, it just means these stories have been in the news/social media.

In that case it would be "press," not "bad press." You're the one putting a value judgment on their reporting. Clearly you don't know how legitimate media work, which is pretty sad considering you are surrounded by people in the best journalism school in the nation who value truth and honesty in reporting.

Oh so you just don’t know what bad press means.

Bad press is just media that portrays something in a negative way. A factual report can portray Greeklife in a negative way, like stories about hazing. There are also plenty of opinion pieces out there that portray Greek life in a negative way. It’s not a value judgement on their reporting.

So pressed for absolutely no reason, I have no ill feelings towards the media.

You ARE an idiot. And you really have the audacity to explain how journalism works to a journalism major? By definition, hazing is not positive. Any story about it would cast the perpetrators in a negative light, especially if someone has been injured or killed. You call that negative reporting. I call that factual reporting. And opinion pieces aren't news stories, so, please, do us a favor and just go away.

Even if something is factual doesn’t mean it can’t have negative or positive impact on the perception of something

Not going to debate over words that have clear definitions, go back to class honey

A reporter is not responsible for how a reader interprets facts, hon. It is the newsperson's obligation to report them, regardless of whether someone construes them as negative or positive. Hence, "bad press' is all in the interpretation. It's that easy. BTW, introductory reporting classes are open to all students. You don't have to be accepted into the J-School to take one. "Okay" might want to consider that.

There are very few factual stories about sororities hazing. Most ARE made up our at a minimum embellished. There are absolutely zero stories of sororities killing anyone. That doesn’t happen…ever

Fraternity hazing on the other hand does happen. But it also is embellished to a large degree. You never hear the entire story. YOU’RE the idiot!
