COB AND INFORMAL

by:

I was wondering how it all works and when it starts and what the next steps are! Can someone explain how it works and how I can get a informal bid to a house I want

COBing is just a way of sorority members getting their friends into their house. The houses who do it all the time are not strong houses; they are desperate to keep their numbers up. If you register for COBing or informal there is no guarantee you will ever get a call, so don't get your hopes up. It also is blatantly discriminatory. Don't ask me how I know.

Keep an eye on the PHA recruitment website, they will list chapters. Most chapters that COB will do so in the spring, around February. It is typically a less formal affair where you attend a couple events at the house, have conversations, and they give bids to a handful of girls. Last time we did COB about 80 girls showed up and we only gave out 10ish bids. Like others have said, it is best to have friends in the chapter.

Why would you want to be in a house that just takes friends of members instead of the most outstanding girls who can really make a contribution. Lots of people have said it, and I agree: houses that do a lot of COBing are not good houses. They do it for financial reasons because they are struggling for money and just want more people to pay dues. And then when formal recruitment comes along they don't do very well, once again, because they don't have very high standards. That's why the best houses do very little recruiting outside of formal. They don't need to.

First of all, everyone gives COB's and houses that only have a few spots just offer them on the DL to girls they already know and don't hold an event. They don't make it public so you would never know. Second, the girls that get COB's are often girls who rushed but dropped out or fell through the cracks, so the sororities have already met them and liked them, and some are girls who didn't want to rush in fall and have met members in class or around and find they want to join their sorority and the members have met them and want them. So third, these COB's are not rejects and can be quite outstanding, there is no desperation or struggling or low standards, just a desire to get more girls that the membership already likes. And finally, sororities are not honor societies, they are social organizations, so girls that are already known and liked get bids as long as their GPA qualifies and they don't have a bad reputation. Again, everybody does COB.

Yes, houses likely already have met many of these girls, and rejected them. It's extremely rare that a house will take you if they said "no" the first time around. There is a reason women go through rush and wind up with nothing, and it's not a good look.

There’s some truth to what everyone has said. There are some girls with no connections who get bids in COB but it’s less common. In spring time on social media you will see many “my roomie/bestie is now my sister posts”

If you are from out of state or if you are a person of color, good luck even getting an invitation to an informal event. It's a rigged system and you have to know someone in a house to even get asked to attend.
