COB AND INFORMAL
by: COB/informalI was wondering how it all works and when it starts and what the next steps are! Can someone explain how it works and how I can get a informal bid to a house I want

COBing is just a way of sorority members getting their friends into their house. The houses who do it all the time are not strong houses; they are desperate to keep their numbers up. If you register for COBing or informal there is no guarantee you will ever get a call, so don't get your hopes up. It also is blatantly discriminatory. Don't ask me how I know.

Keep an eye on the PHA recruitment website, they will list chapters. Most chapters that COB will do so in the spring, around February. It is typically a less formal affair where you attend a couple events at the house, have conversations, and they give bids to a handful of girls. Last time we did COB about 80 girls showed up and we only gave out 10ish bids. Like others have said, it is best to have friends in the chapter.

Why would you want to be in a house that just takes friends of members instead of the most outstanding girls who can really make a contribution. Lots of people have said it, and I agree: houses that do a lot of COBing are not good houses. They do it for financial reasons because they are struggling for money and just want more people to pay dues. And then when formal recruitment comes along they don't do very well, once again, because they don't have very high standards. That's why the best houses do very little recruiting outside of formal. They don't need to.
