by: TruthinessAs recruitment approaches, make sure you ask around and talk with friends and their older sisters about the real sorority situation at Mizzou. You will find that during recruitment sororities will present themselves in a way that they want to be perceived. For example, when I went through recruitment one house with very poor retention kept boasting about lifelong friends, even though by graduation they lose more than half the members of a pledge class. Another with a really spotty academic record went on and on about how important studying and grades are, when the reality is that they provide almost no support for members for whom grades are a priority. I'm sure other people on this site have examples of outright lies that are part of recruitment. So talk to people who already have gone through recruitment and who are part of the Greek system so you know what's BS and what's the truth. Remember, sororities can tell tall tales and spin the truth. You won't know the truth unless you do your own research.

Please be careful going through recruitment. Certain houses will trick you into thinking they care about philanthropy, have financial stability and prioritize school. When I went through, I was too oblivious and wound up in a house that I later regretted. I wish that someone would have told me the truth, but my pichis pushed me to stick with it even tho I was clearly unhappy. While you should “trust the process” do that to a degree. Ask around instead of being naive like I was. Something not mentioned to me was that if you drop recruitment before you sign a document, you can still rush in the spring. Also almost every chapter has signed up for informal recruitment in the past. Wish someone told me that

All the above comments are so true!! I wish I knew earlier what I know now about Mizzou sororities! Greek life is not the only way freshman can meet people and have fun college experience. If you don’t feel good about your recruitment options, it is okay to not join a house and take the time to decide if you really even want to join one. If yes, there are options like informal or even waiting for sophomore year!!

It's all about the environment. The better houses will have grade standards and you will be surrounded by people with the same priorities. Houses that don't care about grades will prioritize partying every night over studying. It's very difficult to care about your grades in a house where no one else does. And it has absolutely NOTHING to do with whether you belong in college. That's a comment from a stupid, stupid woman.
