Kind of Concerned

by: OuttaStater

I am a bit worried about recruitment because I am from out of state and don't know even one person on this campus. I am coming for journalism and live 500+ miles away. I have a 3.96 GPA with lots of AP classes and actually will be entering as a sophomore. I am musical and went to state as a swimmer. I also was on prom court. But I have heard from friends at other schools that sororities take only people that members know. If that's true, I am so screwed. Should I be worried?

Honestly, the sororities that are worth your time and money won't only recruit you based on who you know. I wouldn't worry too much because a lot of incoming freshmen are actually sophomores and end up graduating early. Just be yourself and let the process happen naturally.

There are sororities that primarily taken women they already know. These also are the houses that constantly COB and have trouble keeping members because they join for the wrong reasons. You wouldn't want to be part of those houses anyway. The top houses seek diversity, and that includes geographical diversity. You will know them when you are there during rush because you will talk with girls from outside of Missouri as well as in-state. You sound like a great candidate. Good luck to you. I am sure you will do just fine.

I was in your situation when I went through recruitment. I did just fine and was asked back to just about every house I was interested in. Later, on the other side of recruitment, I realized it was an advantage to not know anyone. When you come from a big high school and know a lot of women already in sororities, or attend a private school where everyone knows your business, it actually can work against you. You would not believe some of the petty reasons people have for voting against someone. But if you know no one, it's hard for them to be catty. Go for it, because you sound like a great fit for a house like mine that values grades, accomplishments and geographic diversity.
