What’s going on with Tri Sigma?

by:

I’ve heard from students that they might be kicked off campus. Is this true?

They are in debt and lost almost half their members this year

By: Tri sigma
by: And, so????

The same can be said for several sororities on this campus. In fact, there is one house that each year sets a record for the number of members who drop out/flunk out. And they seem to think they are a top house!

Every sorority with a new house is in debt. The most financially stable are the sororities with the majestic old houses and the strong alumni networks: ADPi, PiPhi, Kappa. Often their dues are among the lowest, too. Losing members and having a high overhead is nothing new. Most of the newer sororities on campus are in this situation.

If you are saying sororities with new houses are in debt, then why is Alpha Phi building a new house?

Because their old house is a dump? I worry about them, though, because they already have a terrible retention rate. Higher dues that come with a new house won't help.

TriSig has a terrible alumni network, locally and nationally. Without alumni $upport, it's very difficult to do well at Mizzou, especially with a relatively new sorority. You see houses like PiPhi and AdPi that have such a strong alumni network that if they need improvements to the house they are paid for before the work even begins. If TriSig's alums don't step up, they're screwed.

Tri Sigma (along with ASA and AST) is one of the former teachers-college sororities that didn't join the NPC until the 1950s. Its oldest and strongest chapters are at "directional" schools while the ones at big Greek schools struggle. Their chapter at UNC Chapel Hill just folded after barely hanging on for years.

Sigma Kappa is the newest sorority at MU and they’re doing fine without a super large nationals and extremely limited local alum support, so idk if you can put it solely on that fact with how Tri Sigma is doing

They aren’t kicked off yet but my friend is in it and told me they are in serious debt. A lot of girls dropped and their house is only like 1/2 full next year. They need girls desperately but it will be hard for them because other chapters put on a better rush than they do

You’re better off not rushing at all than joining this house. Don’t get into the mess that they are in.

Some people think that this happens to all the new houses, but it seems like these issues are more than that. Truthfully I think we have too many sororities on campus and not enough people wanting to be in them. Why is it that so many houses do informal recruitment? Across the board just about every house seems to do informal, yet so many people get cut from houses during the formal recruitment process. Ideally, houses shouldn’t have to do informal if they take enough girls. I don’t get the thought process

By: Being honest
by: This is Why

The houses that seem to always be recruiting are those with sisterhood and retention issues. If you aren't proud to be in a house, you don't do what it takes to stay. The houses without grade cuts/standards are particularly susceptible to retention issues because they will take just about anyone in order to make quota. And while most houses do informal, you have to look beneath the surface. Some take just a few women during informal when they become aware of how many members will be spending a year abroad, student teaching, accounting internships, etc. Others start COBing immediately after formal recruitment and never stop because they lose so many women all year long. If you are committed to your education, you seek a house with grade cuts. If you are in a house where grades are important, you generally finish in four years and graduate with your pledge class. Those without grade cuts have many members who are just there to party and screw around. Is it any wonder several sororities (and even more fraternities) are in trouble? Is it any wonder that not one of those troubled houses institute grade cuts during formal. You can draw your own conclusions.

The real problem is that NPC sororities here and across the country are going crazy building these over million dollar mansions they really can't afford. So their recruitment and retention now becomes intense just to make and keep their quotas so they make their house payments.

Some can afford those houses just fine, others struggle. Actually, the top houses rarely need to build a new house because they have been updating their existing house all along. At least that's the case at Mizzou.

Let's not be so quick to put the nail in TriSig's coffin. There are several sororities on this campus that are just one recruitment away from being in their shoes. And
TriSig is just one good recruitment away from being a much stronger house. I wouldn't gloat if I were you because your own house might be facing this same thing if it doesn't have a great rush in August.

By: Not so fast
by: unfortunately

Tri Sigma is already in trouble and has been for years. Other houses are struggling, but they don't charge their members thousands of dollars in vacancy fees and refuse to let them terminate their memberships.

"Not let girls drop"? Just stop paying dues etc., hon, and you are no longer a member.

By: Oh, please

It’s not that easy to drop by just not paying dues when you have the threat of a debt collector hanging over your head. This situation sucks and so many women are being lied to and screwed over. I feel bad for those who just joined this year because tri sigma might be doomed.

They’re not doing so great financially. I’m not sure how much longer they will stay on campus. I guess it depends on recruitment this year.

With the comments on this site, any PNM would choose not to rush Tri sig. While it’s great that people are actually letting others know what’s going on, that also makes it hard for them to get members this fall. Just saying, these comments will only make it harder to recruit. We’re putting the “nail in trisigs coffin”as someone stated above. Who would want to join a chapter with this many issues?

by: I don't know ...

Nobody wants to see them fold, but this seems to go beyond just tiers and tent talk. I think PNMs deserve to know if a chapter is in danger of getting its charter pulled. There are countless stories about struggling chapters at other schools who pledged and initiated new members, only to be blindsided by nationals shutting them down and depriving those new members of a college Greek experience.

So, :/, it's wrong to reveal the truth? When did it become our job to save the questionable sororities on this campus? How is that providing a service to PNMs? What other big lies do you want people to believe?

Looks pretty small based on their IG. Just a few photos of individual girls. Hardly anybody outside their house.

So what I’ve noticed is sigma has had a cycle of having a mass of girls drop after living in house. So the bulk of their members typically end up being underclassmen. Idk what happened this year… they had previously been making quota on bid day. They need to really revamp the member experience especially for girls in house, so they’ll actually stay when they move out. I think they’ll definitely have to do COB this fall. I really feel bad because had it not been for the pandemic I think less girls would have dropped, and they would have a stronger showing at rush like previous years when they were filling quota. I just hope that stay true to what they value in membership and don’t just take any girl just to fill the house. In the long run that’s not sustainable and they really do deserve to get the kind of girls they want, they’re so sweet.
