iu vs. mizzou
by: One Mizzou
On a topic that might bring people on this site together as oppose to bashing each other: I have a few friends who go to Indiana University and one of them has recently told me that their Greek Life is so perfect and so amazing- so much better than SEC greek life and specifically Mizzou's. After I stopped laughing i just wanted to share some key points with you guys.
1. Only about 30% of girls who rush at IU get in a house
2. They have "pairings" and that's their only way to get into frats. For example alpha alpha alpha might be paired with beta beta beta one weekend and that's the only frat they can get into.. and only with other girls in their sorority. So how do they ever meet other people or branch outside of their chapters? They don't.
3. Well let's be honest no one does homecoming like mizzou
4. This year a new rule: no freshmen allowed at frats
5. Cold dorms in sororities? 40-50 girls sleeping in one room.. no thanks
I'm sure there's more criticism but these are the ones I'm familiar with or what I know from my friends involved in Greek life at IU.
So let's take a moment to appreciate our Greek life because personally I think our Greek life is awesome.. especially compared to this.

IUs greek life kicks ass. Their greek life is focused on important things aka drinking unlike ours. Their welcome week, homecoming, bid week (the week following when girls get their sororities), and Little 5 is literally a week of straight drinking and fun themed parties in huge frat castles and GASP - actual BASEMENT parties. Our hoco involved like, none of that. Not to mention they have something we could never do - a darty. And they actually have a field to tailgate in which is a million times better than bengals or being in a frats back yard. So ya.
#3by: Why?
There are many reasons to attend Mizzou. The J-school is just one of many nationally ranked programs. But why in the world would anyone CHOOSE to go to IU? It's a default school for people who can't get in elsewhere. I'll choose our beautiful campus, amazing SEC football team, gorgeous Greektown and historic homecoming any day. Oh yeah, can anyone tell me what bowl game IU went to? Or the last time their football team was relevant?

I spent a little time this morning on the IU GreekRank site and, wow, that school has problems. First of all, They have 24 sororities, including many that Mizzou would never consider having on campus, and still only about 50% of girls get into a house. That's because pledge classes are small - less than 50 in many cases. You don't pledge until second semester of Freshman year and the first semester GPA is what is used. I don't know about you, but I had an outstanding high school GPA with just one B in all of high school, plus AP calc, stats, physics, chem and the usual AP English, American History, Psych classes/tests, and still I only got a 3.75 my first semester at Mizzou. I'm not sure the first semester of college should carry that much weight. Plus, legacies mean nothing at IU unless the Mom is extremely active in alum activities and donates a BUNCH of money. That hardly seems fair and indicates legacies buy their way into chapters. Finally, their sorority members seem extremely sheltered because they don't live in apartments as upper classmen. I don't know about you, but when I'm 21 or 22 I would rather do my own shopping/cooking than have the sorority help do it for me. Plus, I LOVE living in a big house on East Campus with my sisters. Anyway, IU is hardly an exemplary Greek system. Seems kinda screwed up to me.
